I got up this morning and tried to start my Expy. but it would not start. I thought it was the battery at first but the expy. will crank. IF I put some pressure on the gas pedal, I can get it to run, but the instant I let off the gas pedal, it dies. My friend thinks it might be the fuel filter. I just put a bottle of STP fuel injector cleaner in about 2 days ago. Could this be the reason for my problems? If it is a bad fuel filter, how hard is it for a novice to change it? I know by reading some of the forums that the part is very inexpensive, but I pretty much know nothing when it comes to things under the hood. Thanks. BY the way, I have a 99 EB 4x4 5.4L. I have 65000 miles on the Expy. Thanks.
Could be the filter, but could also be the IAC valve. This seems to have been popping up alot lately. Hook it up to a scanner and see if it throws any codes. Autozone does it for free if you do not have one.
It's your alternator. That's why teh truck starts. The battery has enough juice to start the truck just not keep it running, that's the alternators job.
That's whay when you let off teh gas it dies. No electricity equals no spark. Get your alternator checked out.
Well, took it to the shop and they could not find anything wrong. once I was able to get the expy. into reverse to back it out the garage, everything was fine. I tried to replicate the problem but could not. If it is the IAC valve, how hard is it to replace. Thanks for all of the replies so far.
The dead giveaway is the failure of the truck to start or idle without pressure on the accelerator. Seems to be more evident when ambient or engine temperature is cool. IAC problems usually crop up after 50,000 miles. 53,000 for me.
