Hey! I have a 1998 f150 4.6 auto trans extended cab with the manual shift Tcase. The other day I was leaving a stop sign and truck at about 30 MPH felt like it went into neutral. I checked linkage to transmission and even took linkage off and shifted through PRND21 by hand. It seemed to go through all the gears. I jumped back up into cab and messed with 4wd shifter. I got truck to drive again but it was stuck in 4lo. No matter where 4wd shift lever is Tcase is in low range. The 4x4 lights on dash go off when you have shifter in 2 H but Tcase is in lo range. Transmission shifts through all the gears. My question is what could cause this? I haven’t found anything online about the manually shifted Tcases and I don’t know much about them.
You've got a range fork that holds a gear within your planetary assy for 1:1, N or low range. If the pads wear thru then the fork gets eaten then that gear floats around
edit: it's a fun rebuild. Don't be afraid of it. Get the 'case on the bench and it's easy
