I’m running 35s on my truck and it hates turning at low speeds. The pump has been flushed and it has a new gear box on it which I had tapped for hydro assist when I ordered it. I’m going to be ordering the ram and mounts soon so was wondering what’s everyone’s thoughts on the bolt on mount that uses the diff cover bolts or one of the HD covers that has the tabs welded to it? Is the cover really worth 3 times the cost of the bolt on mount? I don’t plan on wheeling the truck more than some dirt roads through the woods but steering is terrible even on pavement right now.
How old is your pump? After replacing my pump I can turn at a stop w one finger also on 35’s. Can’t comment on the hydro assist but that’s what I’m going to put on my truck eventually.
The pump is atleast 8 years old, it was there when I bought the truck. I asked about replacement pumps a while back and never got an answer about what a good replacement would be, I’d assume motorcraft but never know since almost everything is a reman now.
I'd put a gauge on your pump an see what it's putting out for pressure first, there's a whole lot of these trucks running stock steering systems and 35's without any issues, I'd bet yours is just worn out. I'd be looking at aftermarket upgraded pumps if I needed one. Only manufacturer that comes to mind is PSC, but I'm sure there's others. IDK what stock pressure is supposed to be, but the steering box can handle up to about 1500psi before you start blowing out seals, so I'd be looking for 1200-1400 psi boxes. I think you can also shim the valve in a stock pump to get more pressure out of it.
Personally, I'd never use one of those cover mounts without some modification to address the shear loads it's gonna see. Either counter bore a couple of the threaded holes in the housing to accept a shouldered bolt, or drill it for dowel pins. I've read of way too many incidents of the cover shifting from the forces and causing leaks. Just weld a solid mount on the pass. side of the axle and have the ram facing to the drivers side and you'll never have to worry about any of it.
I mentioned PSC and maybe Lee in my previous thread but found out I can’t run them without more work to make a custom mount. Atleast if I want to keep my upper radiator hose outside of the belt that is.
I saw several reviews of people mentioning the cover possibly becoming unsealed if special steps aren’t taken first, the bolt on mount sounds much better off. I’d have to look into a mount on the passenger side, it would definitely help tuck it up more and have the hoses close by the trac bar to route them up to the gear box.
I'd call and question the 1800psi, I've read in a few different places 1500psi is the max you should run through the box. If you have hydroboost that can take more, but you need to regulate the box pressure after it.
My output shaft broke on my box. I wanted to ensure that didn't happen again after seeing others having the same issue. Hydro assist from West Texas Off Road pictured here. I chose to weld after warnings of the bolt on clamps slipping and the diff cover mounts not being up to the task. I know some who do run those mounts without issues though and if you're not wheeling it, you may be okay.
I’ll have to give the axle a good look to see how I could mount it near the base of the trac bar. Ive got an 06 front axle so a little different then the pics shown. I assume 1/4” plate would be plenty for the tabs on the axle housing?
