If you live in the south and get this message in the next few minutes go out and look at the moon. Called a pink moon. It's as full as I've ever seen.

picture doesn't do it justice

We caught it on the West Coast, very pretty on a clear night. Did not know it was coming but my better half looked up and shared the splendor. Best things in life are free.

I read there will be a similar or better moon in late May or June, I forget the date. Get the lawn chairs and fave beverages ready!

Quite a beautiful scene indeed. Thanks for the reminder Paul.

I did get a picture, but it didn't turn out well enough to post. Better ones above.

I felt compelled to post some information here in an effort to help people keep their livelihood safe and somewhat private by separating social media with real life. A friend of ours had an incident where they were "tracked and targeted" based on images they had uploaded to their social media platforms of choice.

Do you know what a "geotag" is on an image?

Basically it is a physical/geographical location assigned to an image that can be viewed by anyone with a simple free website tool such as this - https://www.geoimgr.com/

Check your smartphone, tablet or whatever you use to ensure "geotag" is turned off or set to anonymous. It may be under a different name like "location services" or similar. Sometimes it can/will be noted under the "EXIF" field in the properties. Most manufacturers have their own flavor of the operating system and you may have to look for it.

You can verify this setting is functional by navigating to the image, right clicking or going to properties and looking for the geographical location. It will note the latitude and longitude with the GPS coordinates the image was taken.

The snip below is from an image that has the geotag feature turned off.

What about your vehicle license plate? Not a big deal right? Your name at the very least and sometimes your registered address can be to the determined quite easily.

An FTE'r recently posted a picture of the front of his truck after doing some lighting upgrades. His state requires a front license plate, which was clearly visible in the picture he uploaded. There are dozens of free sites to acquire information on the owner of the vehicle and license plate, some states the DMV provides this service. As long as you check a box that states you are not using the information for "housing evaluation, employment opportunities, background check, etc."

What about posting pictures at your place of employment that is in a shop bay or looking out a window? What is in the background of those images? Is there a sign outside that says "Target, Walmart, O'rielly's, etc". Is there a company logo on the screen of the computer? Is there a mug on the toolbox that says "Billy Bob's Fixit Shop"? You see where I am going with this.

In the information age, it is extremely easy to find someone that thinks they are just uploading images and sharing them for fun while talking about their daily life or whatever on social media. Our friend was lucky and things worked out for them, but others are not or may not be.

Have a nice day!

I would always recommend stripping the EXIF info before posting, I usually use Irfanview for reducing the size of my pics before posting and as well removing that info.

These posts were inadvertently moved from the morning coffee thread when the "Pink Moon" pictures and posts were moved there, then back here.

I agree with beachcamper: it's best to remove the whole EXIF, not just the geotag. Removing the EXIF gets rid of camera make/model info which someone could use to correlate pictures that you post on different sites. I use exiftool to strip the EXIF in Linux, and it shouldn't be hard to find a similar tool for whatever OS you use.

It was/still is overcast in AZ so no moon for me.
