9" lube level - no fill plug

I have a modified 9" in my '71 Bronco. It has no fill plug in the third member. Is there a way to check the lube level/add lube using one of the pinon bolts?
Or some other method?

Usually there is no fill plug on the 9" housing - on the back side that you see. Most of the 9" housing with one are either aftermarket or the bung has been welded on. On the actual third member, the chunk, there will be a fill plug IIRC located on usually the drivers side that is an internal hex plug.

Usually that plug is stubborn to remove. An impact really helps with getting it out.... also hit the threads a while with 3 n 1 oil to loosen them.

You likely have a '66 third member in a later housing. In '66 (and maybe '67?) the 9" housing had the fill plug not the third member. It flip flopped after that. So with an early chunk and a late housing, you have no way to add fluid.

Only way to add is from the vent hole on the axle.

Excellent point. Of course, figuring out if it's at the right level won't be easy, assuming you're not starting with a completely empty housing.

I had the same problem
Sure you can add gear oil thru the vent but how much you gonna add?
Best to remove the 3rd member and drill and tap for a fill plug
Ignorant job but you only have to do it once
That is the only way you can get the level correct

You could remove an axle & flip the truck up on it's side & fill from the housing end. Stop when lube runs from the vent hole.

I guess I need to get under some other Bronco's, I thought they all had one on the dvrs side of the 3rd member chunk. Fluid check, grease u joints and then an underside nut & bolt ck. Before hitting the trails.
