I was washing my truck yesterday and the chrome coating is flaking off the front wheel. Any else experience this? My truck was garage kept until this winter when i started storing a second jeep in the garage.
I use a ph neutral wheel cleaner that is supposed to be pvd safe.
not bad yet but if i work at it i can peel more.
i’m not a big after market wheel fan. i guess i’ll start looking for take offs in my area. tires have 45k but i rotate them so tread is still okay. take offs may net me new tires with decent wheels.
The 18" PVD wheel is an upgrade on the XLT (Premium Package) and on the Lariat (Chrome Package). Same wheel.
If my PVD wheels peel under warranty I'm going to ask for the basic Lariat wheel, which I like better anyway. If I were in the market for pull off wheels I'd be looking for those, I even like the silver sparkle painted wheels (XLT) better.
Overall your wheel, center cap and 4wd selector look to pretty tarnished. I have 2017 and 40k miles and always outside and they look better, not like new, but close (is use Brown Royal wheel cleaner, and maybe wash my truck every other month). Your lug nuts look better than mine.
Are those the original tires? Have them had the beads broken? Look like it might have been damaged when dismounting or mounting the tire.

They cleanup great and will shine like new when I spend the time (I use a wheel cleaner from Shine Supply out of CA).
The tires are original, but, that wheel had a TPMS sensor go bad. That may explain what caused the 'chip' that allowed the coating to fail.
I had some TPMS sensors replaced under warranty. And they scratched one of the wheels when doing it. So I had them get me a new wheel (I had someone else swap the wheel when I got new tires and cautioned them to be careful with the wheels or they would also be getting new ones too). They didn't want to do it at first but they finally did. This was not the only issue with quality of their service.
I also make anyone who is going to work on my truck look it over with me first to make sure they know there are no scratches or dents on it. I let them know I am a bit fussy and understand if they don't want to services or work on it.
The PVD will stick to the tires and flake off when dismounting even if the machine doesn't touch the rim. So keep in mind it may not always be the fault of the person dismounting/mounting tires.
I had a rock chip on one of my PVD chrome wheels and used a product called Liquid Chrome by Molotow. It's a chrome marker with metallic flake in it and it looks pretty decent. I picked it up at Hobby Lobby. I put it on over a month ago and it still looks like chrome after weekly washes. Maybe be a decent option for you before replacing a wheel. Every take off I looked at had something wrong with it.
I have the 20” PVD and all of mine have flakes all around. 82k on my 2017 and they got worse when I replaced tires at 50k. I am now looking at either takeoffs or some factory-looking aftermarket wheel to replace them. It’s disappointing but oh well.. I will not be paying to refinish a factory wheel haha
Yup, as soon as you take off the original tire every rim will peel. Mine were replaced when I had Ford install my new duratracs at 42,000 Km. Chrome caps, look bad but not replaced, both wheel hub accuators bad too. not replaced under warrenty. Ford will only replace like for like on warrenty, you want a different rim, its on your dime. Once your 3 year 60,000 km expires, no more rim replacements, bumpers, tow hooks or running boards even with extended warrenty from Ford.
I have one wheel with the exact example of original post. 2019 F350 King Ranch purchased March 2019.
I took truck to local dealer the other day. Service rep took pics of wheels, truck, odometer and vin. Said he went thru Ford and I got call back the next day. Ford has refused replacement. Ford has deemed it (thinking term was) corrosion and is not covered on warranty. Service rep said it was not a Ford defect as the chrome was not blistered or raised.
