Engine compatibility
For a lay person could someone please explain why a 4.0L SOHC engine would not go into an Ex that originally had a 4.0L OHV engine.
I realize that to some this may be a dumb question, but I figure if I learn something it's worth a shot.

Yes, it will fit into the Explorer - no problems there. You have to change a few things in the process though - not just the engine itself. PCM, engine mounts, wiring harness, heater box place (I think), etc.
No, it is not interchangeable in the sense of a 'plug and play' thought. The OHV has different controls and computer sensing than the SOHC.

Some of the later OHV engines have the 5r55e. I have the 5r55e in my 98 and I have the OHV 4.0.
As far as trying to change engines, it doesn't pay off if you don't do the work yourself. You would probably be better off selling your current explorer and buying a vehicle the same year with the engine you want. Less money than having a shop swap engines.

I don't really want to change engines or have the $ to do so.
I had just seen someone that bought a SOHC to replace his OHV and sold the new one because it was the "wrong" engine. I was just curious as to why he sold the engine rather than put it in.
I guess the time, changes and PITA factors came into play.
