Only problem with the analogy is the South wanted to take the land, moving out of a neighborhood is just you and your personal property.
And if the South isn't "over it" by now, sheesh. The fight to maintain the Union was very much economic, but did include the issue of whether or not future states would be slave states or free.
I also ask where did you learn that prior to the war it was a state's right to secede? I haven't heard that before. Something I'd like to read up on.
Yall embarrass me. I do not believe the south will rise again, because it wont, we are a better nation for it. But for goodness sakes, take some pride in you history. Yall want to make analogies, well compare this, because the south was not technically a war well neither was vietnam, so when yall folks who say my daddy was a vietnam vet, everyone says well look at that angry son, he is just p.o.ed because he lost the "War" No it is about history. Yall offend me when yall consistantly talk about how the south is always reminding yall about it, well at least we are proud of out grandfathers who fought for a cause. But I guess yall who argue to drop it, just really don't give a darn about proud history. That is ANTI-AMERICAN. This is not a debate between north and south winning, the south was poor, undermanned, but if they had the proper equipment, yall yanks wouldn't never had a chance. But we are not debating that now are we!
I'm from the North, have settled in the South, and am quite indifferent to either side, since the dispute was settled in the proper manner for the time, by war.
Regardless of States Rights issues, the Southern forces were in effect if not intent fighting to support an economic system that only benefitted the slaveowners and undercut the value of free citizens labor.
The Northern forces were fighting to keep the South under the control of the Federal government. Had Secession gone forward, there would be zero economic loss to the average citizen on either side. The industrial North would still have had the South as a trading partner.
The average soldier had no personal stake in the outcome other than emotionalism shaped by regional leaders, and his life would have changed little, Secession or not.
Migrating West and letting the zealots (and unfortunate conscripts) slaughter each other for nothing looks like the best bet.
Guys....lets give this topic a rest. The second this gets any closer to a race war this thread will be gone faster than you can ask where it went. Keep it clean.

That was meant in jest, rik, but like I have posted so many times when this topic arises, which I can say is fruitless - and don't know why I threw my hat in the ring this time - I don't believe anyone re-e-e-ally won that stupid war.

I kind of figured that. I suppose I should just keep my mouth shut about this. That was a statement made out of frustration. I, like so many others, just get tired of rehashing this issue. Regardless of who won, what the fight was about according to who believes what, it is over, and has been for 138 years.
In this day and age, I would hope this country could come together, as one, and stand tall. Of all the times in our history, I am fascinated with the period around the Civil War. I had relatives on both sides myself. My dad's side of the family lived in St. Joseph, Missouri during the war. That was a very divided area.
Lets just get this one thing straight: NONE of you are "southern/confederates" and NONE of you are "yankees." We are all ONE country and no matter what garbage you claim, you have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what things were like back then, and you have NO right to claim to be offended by what happened back then. YOU weren't persecuted so quit looking at the "other side" as bad people. That stuff is so far in the past, non of it (except the final outcome) effects today's world (well, actually it does, but only because whiny people keep bringing it back up). I KNOW that none of you can look back and say that our lives would be better if the south had won: exactly what benefit would that bring the world???
Go ahead and have southern or northern pride for the fact that they fought for what they believed, but quit whining about it because it is none of your business- you don't know what you are talking about- you weren't there. You can't possibly have the urge to secede or "rise again" because there is no longer any persecution or reason to secede.
I also don't understand the poll
we as a society seem to lose sight of some basically fundamental things: we are all citizens of ONE country, we are all people(humans), skin color has no meaning and we need to focus on today's crippling issues at hand.
yes, we need to appreciate history and the people that fought for various causes but, most of them would roll in their graves if they knew of the untold time we spend debating old issues and not addessing the REAL issues that face this nation today. with the unlimited issues at hand, we need to band together as an undivided nation of citizens and tackle todays issues that are undermining our quality of life as we speak. let's put old issues aside for now and make this a stronger nation for our children before it's to late!! it seems a little mute spending to much time bantering about who can kick whos ***!
I thought the origin of "Yankee" came from a derogatory slang term used by the British to describe the colonist. The revolutionaries adopted it and even took pride in the name. Jefferson was a Virginian but also a revolutionary, so wouldn't he be a Yankee? From all my travels, in general all Americans are known to foreigners as Yankees.
