I assume you are talking about the 7.3. Your truck water temp probe for the dummy gauge on the dash is on top of the water pump. If you want to add a separate probe for another gauge you can do that on the side of the water pump below the thermostat housing. Look for the thread in fitting and remove it. I believe if I remember correctly you will need about a 3/8 Allen wrench to do it..

I installed in the coolant filter housing I got from Riff Raff Diesel. I think you could install it in the water pump plug...I don’t remember how long the probe is though.

There are a couple of options, perhaps you can provide us with the overall length measurement of the probe that is inserted into the coolant passage.

If it is abnormally large or shaped, you may need to go a different route.

You don't have a 2001 or younger ZF6 by chance do you?

The probe extends 1.75 inches and is too long to be used on the plug location near thermostat

The housing that holds the filter has 3 threaded ports. The probe screws into it...

Here is a picture of his installation as a visual aid.

In that same thread, SkySkiJason says the following about installing a coolant temperature sensor.

That said, the only reason to add an aftermarket coolant temp gauge is if the stock gauge doesn’t work at all. We can easily use EOT as a gauge to monitor if the engine is up to operating temp and if there is a problem with cooling system. Monitor EOT with OBD2 using tools like Scangauge2, ForScan, etc.

Hopefully this helps you complete a simple project gone difficult...
