Was driving in 4x4, reversing up a slight hill with no loud. Heard a loud bang, then stopped.
I tried to all of my gears (aode). Nothing. Got under the truck and was able to manually move between 4hi and 2. I don’t recall what position it was in when I first got under there. It was in 4h but I may have jumped out when it made the noise. Note that I manually shift from underneath since the sifting mechanism is froze.
Anyways, I got back under the truck, put it in 4h and it drove. Later, I switched to 2h. Nothing. I unlocked the hubs, still nothing in 2h. Put it back in 4h with the hubs unlocked. I can drive.
did I kill the transfer case? Something else?
I also forgot to mention - was 1 qt low on the tranny. Adding fluid made no difference
Most likely the transfer case if you lost both forward and reverse. Could be as simple as a worn shift fork or something is mechanically broken in the transfer case. Would have to drop the transfer case and open it or swap it with a known good one.

It is early so maybe it’s just me but....in 2wd it wouldn’t move but in 4high with the hubs unlocked it did? That doesn’t add up since with the hubs unlocked it is pretty much the same thing. You aren’t powering the front wheels with the hubs unlocked. The quickest/ easiest thing to check are the hubs. You don’t even need to jack up the front wheels to remove the hub for inspection unless you have the ‘87-88 1/2 top hat style hubs.
Sounds like something is jacked up in the transfer case or its linkage. The transfer might be going into neutral (between high and low range), though if shifting 2>4 gets it back in, I wonder if what you're catching is low range.
A problem with the hubs couldn't take out drive to the rear end.
My thoughts is a bent fork in the case. And 4hi is really 2 hi now with 2 hi being neutral. Had this happen YEARS ago in a shortbed 89 150, owner was a little more than abusive to the truck. And it happened in reverse like you claim.
