Transfer Case
I have noticed a "popping" noise when driving and I have been trying to figure out what it was. Well a few days ago I felt the four wheel drive (on the floor) and it was "popping" with the noise. I have also noticed that the 4x4 hubs become warm/hot after driving. So my first thought was that the spindles inside the hubs were catching... Well they aren't catching, they are just worn out. So my next guess is the transfer case. Am I way off? Has anyone else had this problem? How hard is it to fix the transfer case (as far as I know it's just gears that transfer power to the front end when in 4x4). How safe is it to drive the truck?

sounds like a loose chain in the transfer case. they stretch over time and will slip under pressure. hubs will slip under pressure too but the noise is easily heard from the front of the vehicle. For as Driving, the hubs or the transfer case chain will not effect it in 2 wd.
