Cowl Vent seal

Anybody got any tricks for this? I just ordered and installed a new cowl vent seal from MidFifty. It’s fully glued and seated but the vent sits about 1/4” proud of the cowl. Tried a heat gun to make the seal more flexible, nada. Tried adjusting the 4 mounting bolts with the rear as high as it would go and the front as low as it would go, Nope. Even added washers to the 1/4 mounting bolts (other wise the heads went inside holes in the vent limiting adjustment. Ain’t happening.
Maybe I’m just too picky?
Here’s a couple of shots.

Drivers side view

passengers side view. And yes I chipped the new paint

My cowl vent is chipped too.

It should fit tighter than that. And your not too picky. I don't have any advice though except it might get better in time.

How does it look with your hood closed?

I had trouble with that on my 49, it was the handle inside wasn't coming back far enough to pull it down like it should be.

BJ mine is the same. It's high by about 1/4". Spent a lot of time adjusting and re-adjusting. Egged out the holes in the side of the vent with a chain saw file to allow extra adjustment with no success. And yes I chipped my new paint as well. Was NOT Happy but I'm resigned now and moving on. I'm thinking a savvy manufacturer of rubber products like Steele could make this with a softer spongy material to fix this.

It’s funny that without the gasket it fit flush. So it has to be the rubber. As close as I can tell the problem is with the mounting channel and how the gasket mounts to the hole. My gasket, the part you would think would do the sealing, is soft and moves down the required 1/4”. It’s like the slot in the gasket that mounts on the lip of the hole is holding the gasket up to high.

Abe, hoods not on yet. The bodyshop wanted me to start installing cab stuff BEFORE the cab was placed back on the chassis. He says everything will work out so, We’ll see.

Nice truck from what I can see.
Leaking is more my worry than the front kicking up. I had to cut about a 1 1/2” outta mine and glue it back together.
Yours is high all the way around. The way the seals made it must be leaking somewhere where it was glued. Mine actually rolls over the vent hole lip.
I’m about to do my patina 53 Panel pretty soon.

Here's mine , it's too tight at the back and won't sit down like yours .
i'm going to try bending the hinge where it is spot welded up under the cowl .
When i bought this truck the hinges were frozen and i think i've bent something when i was freeing them up .

On my 55 the passenger side is good but the driver's is a little high. It was tough getting the weather strip on to the flange. Mid fifty instructions say that its difficult to get it on correctly.

Seaves46, I had the same problem. That's how/where my paint chipped. Bending the hinges won't move it forward. I elongated the mounting holes to tilt the front up a bit which allowed the vent to shift a bit more to the front.

Just noticed something on this thread. Only Grey/Silver trucks have vent issues?

Have the same issue on my 48 that I did 20 years ago. I had hoped the mfgrs would have sorted this out by now.

First drive in heavy rain let me know why the floor mats were rubber and why so many floor pans are rotted out. It also taught me to use Rain-X and not rely on the wipers.

Sometimes it depends where it comes from

There many parts stores out there with very competitive prices. When I start to rebuild my 56 F100 I looked first on the price but had to learn you do better not. If the vent seal cost much less then for example Denies Carpenter there for sure from China and that means not standing for quality. Had the same issue and spend a week to make it fit without success. I decided to order a quality rubber seal what was made for sure to the exact measure as the OEM and it fits first time without any trouble.
