First off, let me apologize if my questions have been answered already. I have read several posts and I think I know less now than when I started. A friend of mine would like me to swap his 223 out for a 302. I'm not one to start something without doing some research first. He has a 1957 F100 with a 223 and a T98-1R 4 speed. He really wants to retain the T98. Will a 68 to 74 302 bolt up to his current bellhousing? If it matters it has a hydraulic clutch. If it won't bolt up and work, is there a bellhousing that will work? Thanks in advance, your help is greatly appreciated.
Nothing will bolt to that bellhousing except another 223 six, a 302 will fit and work great, but mounts will need to be made, or bought, can't tell you about using the orig trans.
Don't know if there are adapters. Why does he want the T98? Does he plan on hauling heavy loads? If not, he'll likely never use the granny low. I think most people are swapping transmission as well. C-4, C-6, or overdrive stick shift.
That's a great question that has a long answer. I will keep it short. I originally figured to go 302 with a C4. He likes to shift. I was ok with that if a 302 would bolt up but it doesn't look like that is a possibility so I'm now on track to go with the 302 and a T19. This looks to be doable. Is there anything anyone knows of that will cause problems? I found a bellhousing but may need a tailshaft unless the T98 will work.
