1996 F250 4x4 super duty with 351. 225K miles. All of a sudden the transmission does not shift from 1 to 2 at normal RPM. Much higher rpm required. If let off the gas slightly it will shift. Same with the remaining gears. Overdrive button on shift level not working. No light. Truck is idling much higher in park than before; like the choke is on when its cold.. Idle doesn't settle down. If you are driving it the idle is enough to do 25-30 MPH with no gas applied.
All of a sudden this has happened. Runs at 65mph but it's running in third not overdrive. If I slightly let off the gas it seems to shift to OD but as soon as re-apply the gas, shifts down again. The overdrive switch does light for a minute or two but when driving it, no response or light on... HELP!
You need a scan tool to read the codes on that truck. I recommend Forscan. You can download it free at www.forscan.org. There is a description of the ELM327 adapter that you'll need to buy to connect it. I bought mine from Amazon for less than $30.
Although I'm note sure what caused your E4OD to act up. But I'll ask if you added any LED bulbs recently? Reason I asked, when I tried replacing the third brake light with a LED buld to reduce the heat build up, the LED affected my 1995 F-150 5.0 E4OD transmission, causing it shift erratically into and out of over drive. When I replaced the incandescent bulb back into the third brake light, my E4OD transmission shifted normal.
Also, about 10 years ago, the ground wire on the passenger front engine bay for the headlight became loose and when I used the right turn signal while driving on the highway in over drive, the transmission would shift out of over-drive, so check your lighting grounds. Let us know what worked to resolve your dilemma. Thanks

I agree that you will need the codes to fix this.
Will Forscan read ALL the trans codes?
I used TorqueLite with an ELM327, but it won't read the trans code(s), even though my O/D flashing code....it seems some of the apps won't read all trans codes, but sometimes they just read certain ones.
Thanks for the ideas on my tranny problem. So I went out to get a tool to check the codes. When i plug it in, no read-out. Even if I turn on the ignition. Sounds like bad connections to the data link. Now I need to trace that down...is there a fuse in line to the PCM? This is what the Innova 3020rs manual says...
The Code Reader will automatically link to the vehicle’s computer(s). If the LCD display is blank, it indicates there is no power at the vehicle's DLC. Check your fuse panel and replace any burned out fuses. If replacing the fuse(s) does not correct the problem, see your vehicle's repair manual to locate the proper computer (PCM) fuse/circuit. Perform any necessary repairs before continuing...Wish me luck

Yes, the scanner "should" boot up when plugged in. However, the 3 scanners I've used ONLY read codes when the engine was running.... regardless of what the direction said on the scanners I used, the scanners only worked with the engine running.
In other words, I would see if it works any while the engine is running first. Then I would check it on another vehicle to see if the scanner is at fault. Then I would check the fuse & look online for reviews of the scanner to see if others experienced the same issue.

Yes the PCM has a fuse but that has nothing to do with the data link connector power. Check Fuse 16 in the Instrument panel fuse panel.
Update: Got a cheapo scanner and I got the error code P1120. Prior to that, checked the fuse box and the fuse wasn't even there! Stuck one in and the scanner worked right away. So that is the code. Is the TPS sensor a plug and chug item or should investigate further. Scan also said wiring.. where is that bad-boy? I'll check the forum and see if there is a pic somewhere
Just noticed the “super duty” part when looking back to see what engine you have. You do not have a F-250 super duty. It is either a Light Duty or Heavy Duty. There was a F-Super Duty back then but it was a cab and chassis truck and was more like an F-450. The Super Duty trucks didn’t come out until 1999.

You can and should test the voltage and resistance of the TPS before replacing it. You lost me.... where is what: the wiring? If you’re asking where throttle position sensor is it is under the throttle body.
