1988 350 7.3 I'm having a issue with the idle. Truck starts right up but then the idle drops then starts to surge while in park. Shift to reverse or drive then the surge goes away but acts like it wants to die when coming to a stop. Not sure what or where to start any help is greatly appreciated.
Sounds like a governor droop slack problem, or a clogged fuel filter.
There's a stud that comes straight out of the injection pump, right above where the lines come out. It normally has a plastic anti tamper warranty cap.
Loosen the nut and take the stud in 1/4 turn at a time.
I've never had an issue doing this but do this at your own risk. You could just have a wonky injection pump but it definitely sounds like a governor droop to me.
Thanks for the reply.
fuel filter was changed before I took this truck on a 1500 mile road trip. During this trip I thru the alternate belt and vacuum pump belt. This problem started after the belts were replaced. Any chance that had something to do with this?
I assume that it does a normal Cold start with the norm Cold fast Idle speed 875-900 RPM then drops down to the curb idle speed that is posted on the VECI sticker 650-700 RPM for most.
if it's lower than that you might just turn the Idle up a bit and see if it helps....DOC could be correct about the droop adjustment too... you might could fill the filter with ATF or Diesel Kleen run it 30 seconds shut it off over night and the next day take her for a good drive and burn the spiders out.
I could see maybe belts knocking wire connectors loose BUT I don't think that is the problem.
I would make sure those Idle speeds were correct first, which requires a Tach if ya don't have a good working tach in the dash then either a magnetic/Photo Tach or monitor the Alternator.
