Those of us with 85-86+ EFI trucks,
Have you noticed how loud the high pressure pump is??? It's all I can hear at idle and low speed. It's Quite annoying.
Has anyone done anything to make it quieter? Is that even possible?
I plan on building a new exhaust system for it, one that's much less restrictive and a little louder. So I could drown out the pump noise, but....
A light whirring is all I ever heard out of one. Unless I was running out of fuel or the pump was getting ready to go. Is the engine running ok? You could go to Harbor Freight and buy a cheap fuel pressure checker and check the fuel pressure IF you have the test port on the fuel rail. Some of the early trucks did not have a pressure test port.
I have never heard any noise at all from the high pressure pump when engine is running. Just the barely audible whine during the pre start prime cycle. Been driving the same '86 EFI for thirty-five years.
In the 25 or so years of having this truck I have never heard the fuel pumps. You should check yours and plan on fixing or replacing it. Noise that is that loud is not normal. But I guess you have figured that out by now.
