Armature screw broke off in the poppet valve on an injector from a 7.3. I have a couple of extra AE injectors and I wanted to know if I can use one of their poppet valves in a AD injector.
So you have poppet screw broken that needs to be drilled off?
I've had poppet screw broken straight from the top,so it was easy to replace. @cleatus12r Has plenty of experience about disassembling oil side of an injector and drilling broken poppet screw, without pulling an injector.
Taking poppet valve from another injector is a big NO NO!
Exactly the same poppet valves in AD and AE injectors..But It won't seal properly to the injector body so injector would be useless because it won't hold pressure.
If you are unable to fix that broken screw, you need to pull the injector to fix it or replace it with an another injector.
Here's cleatus12r:s post from my injector thread when i had poppet screw broken from the top:
I have lost 4 armature screws in different injectors in the AAs in my Crown Vic. It's about a 30-45 minute job in that car though so I just suck it up and do it. After the last one, I started putting in NEW screws and not used ones out of other injectors I have laying around. I have at least 7 that are prone to breaking at this point (counting the three with used screws from before) but I know what happens and I know it's not hurting anything other than a little performance. Like you, I just pull the injector apart in the engine, but I have to pull out the poppet and use a 1/16" drill bit from the bottom to get the broken piece out....mine never break right at the head. I've never had professional remans do it though - just the one set that I personally went through. Oh well.
I realize that I didn't fully describe my dilemma. I'm rebuilding a set of injectors for a 7.3. The armature didn't have the appropriate clearance so I had to take it back off to shim it but the new screw, from the rebuild kit, rounded out. I had to drill it and use an "ease out". Unfortunately, it didn't work. The screw broke well down inside the poppet valve. I appreciate the information that a poppet valve from another injector will not seal. That's what I needed to know. Thank you.
