Leave them in auto or the lock position. I believe what you're contemplating will leave them partially locked as you'll only be partway up the ramp that locks them fully. I don't know if vacuum will take them the rest of the way or not.
If you want them to be "off" leave them in the auto position and disconnect and plug the vacuum signal to them. I pull the hose off the feed to the hub solenoid and cap the port when I don't want them engaging automatically.
