I searched lots of past topics on front hubs but was still a little confused, so I appoligize if this has been answered a hudred times. My dad just bought a 99 f-250 diesel with 135k miles and we have been having hub issues.
Question 1: it has manual hubs but a switch on the dash to engage/disengage. Does this mean it originally had auto hubs and they have been changed?
Question 2: Do the vacuum lines only work with auto hubs, or do the manual hubs need vacuum too?
I ask these because the passenger side vacuum line has been removed and plugged from the hub before he purchased it, but the drivers has not. We were not sure if it needed the vacuum line or not since the passenger side is hesitant to unlock, but will if you tap on it for a bit after you turn it to free. Thanks for your help.
Do the hubs say Auto and Lock or do they say Lock and Free? The OEM hubs have a manual position on them that allows you to manually lock them if you auto fails. These need vacuum to operate in auto. If they say Lock and Free, they are not auto and need to switched by you. If they are the Lock and Free (manual) someone has changed them out for you.
Yes, if you have the switch on the dash, the truck came with auto hubs. And like Barry said, the PO changed them to manual hubs because he had trouble with the manuals.
NO, the manual hubs don't need vacuum to operate. You just turn the hubs to lock and you are good.
Are you having a problem with the hubs? You can take the vacuum line off and plug the fitting on the hub. And make sure you plug the vamuum line also, to not have a problem with vacuum.
I will have to call my Dad to confirm, but now that I think about it they do say auto/free, not lock/free. That would explain why the passenger hub has trouble unlocking since the vacuum hose was missing. I think I am just going to suggest he buy some Warn replacements and make sure all hoses are plugged. Thanks for welcome and all your help.
