I'm sure engineers are very educated people but it amazes me what they design sometimes. My son had a Chevette years ago and when the heater core went bad it was a simple job of unbolting it in the engine compartment and sliding it out of the heater. Guess it costs more to make a housing with a hole in it.

It gets better the later the model truck you buy. I saw our shop replacing the heater core in a 2009 superduty. If you look at the dash in the interior, it's very deep. That is because the heater core and A/C coil are all under the dash instead of poking out in the engine compartment like the older trucks. They had to pull the complete dash out to change it. Dropped the steering column down and all.
