Horn issues

79 F-250
Horn doesnt work thought it was the pad as it works if you short across to steering wheel.
Have tried 2 other pads with no results?
Anyone got any ideas?

check to make sure the continuity strap is not rotted away on the steering shaft rag joint in the engine compartment -- this strap across the 2 nuts on opposite sides of the rag joint provides a ground for the steering column --- you can replace it with some copper wire with eye lugs on each end.

Is the two wires coming from the pad connected to the steering wheel?

Well.....
If you can short the wires and the horn works....

That means either the steering wheel pad (in this case pads) are bad OR not hooked up right.

I am voting not hooked up right.

it doesn't matter how it's hooked up, it's only a switch.
I assume since you say you can hook it up either way, you don't have speed control (and no horn relay)...
what is the resistance between the 2 horn pad wires when you press the horn button?

Mainly havnt reported back because I’m not sure what you meant? I’m guessing you said to ohm between the 2 horn wires? But if it’s not got power there

correct, measure the resistance between the 2 wires on the horn pad while pressing the area on the horn pad that normally activates the horn. Each time you press, the resistance should drop to near zero ohms.
