For all of us that had vehicles that weighed 5000+ pounds, vehicle registration was due on 12/31 of each year right?
Well, on 12/30/2020 I renewed my tag for about $140 that was good until 12/2021. Traded that truck in March and transferred the tag to my new truck.
Well, I just got the registration in the mail from the dealership with a new yellow sticker showing my tag expires in April (my birthday.)
I called the tag office up and they said a new law was passed last year that vehicles over 5000lbs will now be registered on your birthday.
Ok, great! So even though I paid $140 for my renewal in December, there are NO REFUNDS and it’s not prorated. So I paid $140 for a 3 month renewal and now I’m about to pay another $140 for a April 2021- April 2022 renewal.
Really, WTF is this crap? How can Florida take your money for something you paid for and not refund you??
Sorry, I am in NY, and we have our own DMV drama. They will always get their $, it is government at it's finest...
Just be happy you were not born on January 1st!

I'm in NY too and unused portions of registration fees are not refunded. The only good thing for me is trailer registrations are prorated. Trailer registrations expire on 12/31 of each year. I can renew the registration anytime during the year and the fee is prorated based on the remaining time. The first day I need one of trailers (usually not until late April or May), I go online and renew the registration. The horse trailer may not get used at all so I renew in mid-December for a couple of bucks to keep the registration active.

The state has to make up for the lack of income taxes somehow, I guess. The governments always get the money they want, one way or another. Directly, indirectly, etc. It sucks, but it's true.

Just be glad you are in a state that only charges $140 for rag. Fees. What if they charged ten times that........$1400?
Wow that totally sucks and the dealer should have said something, maybe.
Here I just transfer my plates but have to pay for the Title of $75. I know they have to redo the reg but maybe that is only $25 I think, can't remember as I got new plates with this truck
New plates are $60 for 2 years but I got Special AG plates so $100/2 y/o, $75 title

Ever notice most semi trailers on the road have Maine plates?
The state of Maine offers a great loophole for trailers.
Register in Maine using a reg company who is assigned POA, and get your registration cheap and no sales tax.
I think this 53’ costs me 150 bucks for 5 years,

Frank, I feel your anger. I wonder how my Florida registration will be handled at renewal time next year since my birthday is January.
I still will take Florida’s taxes over most other States. We don’t pay State income tax or Estate or inheritance tax Our annual vehicle fees are one of the lowest in the nation.
I guess I'm about to get screwed over also. My Birthdays this month too. I was late paying mine asI didnt notice my Truck ran out in december, where my other vehicles are paid in April. They just sent me a sticker that runs to the end of this year. Hmmmm. I guess come december, I'll call them and ask if I'll be charged again in April, and if they say yes then I'm not gonna pay till April then and will just take my chances.

True. In the old days we were in the same situation that Frank described. But we at least now have procedures in place to get unused portions of registrations refunded or credited to a new registration.
I've had it happen so I know it's true. Certain conditions have to be met, but it does happen. https://dmv.ny.gov/registration/regi...endered-plates
The big PIA in New York, at least in my county is that no open office hours for people to come in when they can. We have to make an appointment online. Last one I made took just about a month wait.
I used a neighboring county when I bought a used boat last August. They had all the instructions on their website. I mailed in the stuff with a signed blank check. They called me a few days later to tell me that the paperwork was in order. They told me how much it was going to cost and asked permission to put the amount on my check. I of course agreed and a few days later I had the boat registered in my name. It would have taken 6 weeks or so at my local office back then.
