My 97 F250 PSD has had this weird issue where it will randomly cut out/jurk going down the road. I've brought it to a few shops they haven't found any issues with it and of course, they cant get it to do it when they drive it. It seems to do it worse when you get on it and when it is cold. I've had the truck for about 2 years and it has done it the whole time I've owned it. I have changed so many things to try and fix it but it has just slowly gotten worse to the point where it acts like it dies and bump-starts itself again but no gages move and no lights come on so I'm running out of ideas. Anyone got any I could try?
You described the exact thing that happened to me when I had a bad ipr. What new parts have you put in? And always only genuine motor craft parts. Parts store brands don’t play well with our trucks
I've done a new e- fuel system, Adrenolen Hpop, bigger 180/30% injectors, Hydra tuner, new ICM, new ICP camshaft, and plenty of other sensors. But it did it before I even touched the motor so none of this actually caused it.
A faulty cam position sensor can cause brief cut out. You stated that you changed it, but did you use a Motorcraft one? Aftermarket ones do not play nice with these engines.
I have this issue currently. The IDM has a direct short to the body and if I put it on the fender, it cuts half a bank. It was intermittent for a while until it became constant... I have my IDM wrapped in a towel until I can track it down.
Another place to check is the ignition switch under the steering column, start the truck and shake those wires and see if that tries to kill the engine, mine had a the bolt holding the harness to the Ignition switch stripped for some reason and allowed it to walk away and not make contact at random times.
Check the tuner electrical connections to the truck. I don't know how the Hydra connects, but my Banks chip came loose and intermittently drove the truck nuts. Cut-outs under power, at stops, refiring on its own, waiting random periods before restarting...
Turns out the chip vibrated loose a bit from the PCM connector. Pushed it back on tight, restrained it with electrical tape and some glop, and hasn't recurred since.
Even if your problem isn't the tuner, it sounds like an intermittent electrical open circuit. Partially broken wire or connector, or maybe loose ground, that sometimes vibrates open. Or a faulty sensor. My sympathies trying to track this down; I expect it will be, um, "fun".
