I’ve got a 2013 550 that I had to take to a Powerstroke shop. I was having what I believed to be fuel issues. Threw all the parts and diagnostics at it that I’m capable of. Had to throw in the towel and let a professional take a look. They put $220 worth of diagnostics at it and simply said I need a new motor. To the tune of $21,000.
My first step is to take this thing to a different shop. It took them a month just to get this diagnosis to me. So I’m gonna get a second opinion from another Powerstroke shop.
So I guess all I’m really asking is, should I really be planning for a 21 thousand dollar invoice if I in fact need a new motor? After a new turbo, transmission, emissions system overhaul, and now a new motor all within 140,000 miles, I’m starting to lose my faith in the newer diesels. My 7.3 is gonna go to the grave with me. I’m just not sure my wallet’s big enough for these new and improved diesels.
All I can say is about what I say about any modern vehicle, when a person gets a bad one they all get pretty expensive in short order. And most of them go a lot longer than what yours has. But, with that being said, I had a 91 Kenworth with a Cat 3406 that cost like $10,000 just to rebuild the fuel pump and new injectors 20 some years ago.
No, they didn’t say a damn thing. Just, “needs a new motor. That’ll be 21 grand”. Which is why I’m taking it elsewhere.
The 15 grand or so I’ve spent on it already hasn’t helped the profit margins this year either. Not to mention getting one of my tool trailers stolen. That was about a 65 thousand dollar loss. The housing market’s rising a bubble, but I assure you there ain’t that kinda profit in building them.
I’ve always been the buy cash, fix what’s broke guy. This truck was really what I needed. Heavy duty diesel with the right enclosed service bed. I thought I was making a good move going with a 70k mile truck. It’s a diesel, they run forever right? I put ~50k a year on a truck. If the big answer for diesels these days is keep them until warranty’s up, I’m buying a brand new truck every 2 years and taking it in the shorts. These catastrophic failures are just insane.
Its a gamble with anything you buy. I just traded my 2015 6.2 gas for a 2019 6.7 diesel. My work truck is a 2014 with 245000 miles, and still going with little engine issues. I would definitely look at another place and get a second opinion. I would also want to know why, and what caused the issue. I would be very cautious with that place.
Just found a complete long block for 6500. So, be very cautious with those people. https://usdieselparts.com/i-24070374...hoCFqAQAvD_BwE
I am always cautious when buying used. You just never know what the owner before you did. I have always gotten my servious done at my dealer and lots of paperwork for the new buyer to look at if I ever decide to sell It's funny that if you go to the lot to buy a used truck they usually don't give you any paperwork on the vehicle even if it had some. Sorry OP about your issues. Sounds like a tough year for you. Have you given the dealer a shot?
WOW, $21k is about half of the entire trucks value. If you have the time and resources I would part it out if it really does need a motor maybe a used motor is the way to go, seems there are a bunch of them on car-part.com in the 5-6k range, if someone changes $2k, which I think is a bit high but kind of in line to install the investment is less than half of what they want for a refurb.
