Unhappy $700 for clutch replacement?

My truck is in need of a new clutch, and I decided it's not something I want to take on, so I called a tranny shop today and asked what it would cost for them to put a new clutch in my Ranger (truck in signature). He said it will be about $425 for labor, $25 for fluid, $50 to resurface the flywheel, and about $200 for the clutch kit, bringing total to about $700. I realize that it's a lot of work, but is it really $425 worth of work?
I just happen to have the money right now, but having a hard time giving someone that much. Looks like I'll be calling around to get some other quotes. Anyone here know what a decent price for the job might be? Thanks,

Brian

That's about right, in fact it's on the cheap side. Best I found was $920 for mine. They also did the U-Joints (only $30 or so) and refilled all the fluids.

The real pain is that on the 4x4's you have to start by dropping the transfer case (and put it back on last) and that adds a good deal of labor.

I have to ditto Jim on this one; the price sounds painful - but completely reasonable.

FWIW.

I think they also changed out my slave cylinder ($70 part if I remember right) at the same time, which is a good thing to do as you have to drop the tranny to do it later. I would also have them check the rubber plug seals on the top of the Mazda tranny if your truck is so equipped.

Thanks for the help guys. I guess I should have them change the slave cylinder too then. Better to spend $70-100 now than 400 later right? Hey while I'm at it, maybe I can convince him to lube the slipyoke
Appearantly the shop usually installs Luk clutches, which are advertised on this site. He said they've never had any complaints about them, except for older people who complained about it being harder to push the clutch in.
Thanks again,

Brian

All I can say is, it's quite a lot of work. A friend of mine & I did my '86 Ranger, then we did his '88 BII, then, my '88 BII. We did get better at it, but I ain't about to do another right away. Gettin' that connection apart at the slave cylinder is impossible in most cases here in upstate NY due to the corrosion from the salt and CaCl they use so much of on the roads here. I think your price is reasonable. Because it is expensive, we find Rangers and BIIs with those problems to be real cheap. Unless they're in exceptional condition, no one wants to invest the money. I had to do a starter ring gear on my B2. Took about 6 hours. Could have done the clutch at the same time, if I wanted to, but I got rid of it instead. 700 bucks is justified. Think 6 hours X hourly rate of $70 per hour is $420.00. Think how much you can save by doing it yourself. You don't have to remove the slave cylinder. It'll stretch. I've done it. The exhaust doesn't have to come out. The trans will come back with some squeezing with a pry bar or hammer.
