I noticed a round circle of soot on the ground under my tailpipe after starting it up. I don't ever see smoke out of it, although it's a few seconds before I can look at the tailpipe after I start up. And never see smoke while driving. Just noticed it today, and I see a second one from when I parked here two weeks ago (friend's house in CA). The circles are about 5" in diameter, clearly comes out of the tail pipe. The soot isn't wet.
Other fun stuff - my heater doesn't work??? Never had that before. Plenty of coolant, thermostat/cooling system working fine. The dash fan doesn't work, but still, the little bit of air coming out should still be hot, and mine isn't.
I read about a valve in the heater hose that can stick closed, but I didn't see one on this Eseries - it's prolly behind all the crap up front/top.
Also had smoke come off my Temla brake, which scared me, but it was just oil dripping on it. I'll find the leak when I get home next week.
No heat might be the blend door actuator. On the F-series, you can drop the glove-box and pull it off in about 2-minutes and see if it's actuating properly by cycling the hot/cold ****. They are plastic gears inside so they do break.
Thanks, 5o. I think the actuator is working. When I turn the switch from Vent to Mix to Floor to Off, the air comes out of the different places. Gotta get the fan working for sure - it was cold in Flagstaff.
For the most part, I am unfamiliar with the E-series, but can you get access to the coolant return hose off of the heater core - just to do a "feel test" on it? It will be relatively cool to the touch if the heater coolant valve is there and closed.
Not real sure on the soot, but I guess I would first make sure all the air flow components are in good shape (good air filter, no charge-air leaks, etc). You might also verify that IAT1 and IAT2 are reading ambient temperature after a good "cold soak".
OK, I'll program those gauges to monitor. I never see any smoke, just the circle appears on the concrete. Today, it looked a bit shiny, like liquid, but nothing on my finger when I wiped. I'm not sure if it does it as soon as it starts for a few seconds, or is always doing it. I need to monitor it more closely. These buses typically have so many idle hours that I expect them to have dirty turbos. Prolly stupid, but I had the idea that my driving style - hour after hour, hundreds of miles, at highway speeds - might kinda "self-clean" it.
