I have a 2011 Ford Ranger 4.0 4x4. I’ve never really tested or had a hunch on how many miles I have left before I’m on the side of the road when my gas light comes on. I usually pull in to the nearest gas station when it does appear.
Any stories or assumptions on the mileage left once it does tell you to refuel? I tried looking through the manual and google but couldn’t find much.
I dont think its consistent. the fuel light comes on WAY earlier in my 04 than it did in my 99. (both 3.0/ext cabs/auto) A "mile" amount would be dependent on gas mileage. 4 cyl would get much more than a 4.0 4x4 with low gears.
I take it that’s where the remaining 2 gallons go when it’s time to fill up? Manual says I have a 19.5 fuel tank but on average, I’m only able to
fill up around 15-16 gallons. 2-3 gallons of fuel left to show refuel seems pretty questionable. If not, 54 miles left based of mpg on 3 gallons isn’t too bad then.
They say not to do this, but with my 04 I can get 2 more gallons in by shaking the truck with my butt while filling. It seems to have several gallons worth of an air pocket in there. My 99 never had that problem.
You could always carry a 5 gal can of fuel and run it dry to get a real answer.
On the 99 Ranger in my signature, when the "Check Gauge" lamp turns on, I have 1.5 gallons remaining.
Seeing as how our Fuel Pump depends on being immersed in fuel to keep it Lubed & Cool, Regularly running the tank this low, (below 1/4 remaining), will shorten the fuel pump life!!! SO, Ford suggests we should refill around 1/4 remaining, to keep that puppy happy & long lived, or it won't make a danged bit of difference how much fuel remains, if the pump won't run at all, or is so wimpy & worn out it can't make enough fuel pressure to run the engine & you know "Murphey's Law" is rubbing those hands together, grinning, salivating in great anticipation, to have the fuel pump lay down on us at the Worst possible time!!!! lol

My 04 does the same. Even if I pump at the slowest rate possible it seems to click off a bit early. I rock the bed a couple times and then pump again and always get at least another gallon from burping the fill neck. When it clicks off I do it again and can get almost another gallon. People do look at you kinda funny though. If I record gas mileage it makes it harder to get an accurate number.
