I am trying to resolve a starting and running issue with my '88 2.9 Ranger. It's a new crate engine with less than 10k miles, I put in 10 years ago.
On a cold start, it cranks and starts fine. Idle or drive to warm up, it will stall out at a stop. Then trying to restart, starter will drag, like weak battery.
Let it cool off, repeat same scenarion above.
It's almost like it's losing ground? (had same issue with my '02 Sportrac 4.0)

Perform the KOEO test to check for fault codes. It might help get you started on where to look. The hot start issue sounds like the timing is off. What is the base timing set at and was the spout removed when it was set?
The pcm is always making adjustments to the timing while running. Removing the spout takes the computer out of the loop. It is located near the distributor on the passenger side.
Many thanks, My4 - if you couldo do one more thing for me, please? Back off a little and point to that pcm connect and shoot me another pic?
I want to be sure I can find it.
Ok, what you have circled looks like my pcv valve.
In my photos, the top circeled plugs into side of distributor, the middle circled plugs into valve cover (pcv valve, non-electrical), and bottom circled is plug of unknown origin (yellow wires). I cannot see anywhere it would plug?
I can’t see the whole connector in the bottom picture so I don’t know what you mean by disconnected. Is the spout not there? You just have an empty connector?
Ok, what you are pointing to, does it plug into something, or maybe the top just pulls off?
i don't see anything like that on my 2.9
The plug I showed (2 yellow wires) is one-half of a connector (plugs to SOMETHING?). I just cannot see where.
I will get a better pic in the morning.
Yep - found a YouTube video and finally figured that out.
Pulled cap off spout and attempted to set timing with gun. It appears to be correct now but running rough (missing and backfiring) so cannot be right?
Also, turned key off then back on - dragging no start - turned key back off and DIESELING (turning over with key OFF). Had to disconnect battery cables (was smoking over-heating battery ground cable). WTH?
