Does anyone know if the 2002 Excursion steering wheel will fit my 2001 Excursion
? If it's a difference in the cruise control buttons, I can use my old ones.
In my spare time I stitch up wheels so I have been known to cruise the junk yards pulling wheels.
as far as I can tell in 2001 Ford was still trying to dial in the color, they have 3 diffrent medium parchments, by 2002 they settled on 1.
In 2002 the electrical platform changed, deleting the GEM unit. The wheel it's self will fit fine, but you may have connection issues with the clock spring, redundant controls, IE: plug change, and or wire color/position changes. It's kind of hard to find a 2002-2005 without the extra buttons for radio and climate functions.
Description:With cruise control with leather, parchment.
same wheel used in 2000-2002 expeditions plus the vehicles listed.
the simple thing to do, ask vendor for a picture of the wheel you are intrested in.
you could always sand down your current wheel and use the proper paint on it, sounds like your vendor just did a **** poor job. ( fwiw painting them never lasts very long, That is why i oil mine like a saddle. Cant do that on they type of leather you have.)
It sure would be nice if Ford used the same part number for the Expedition as for the Excursion is the part is identical, but that might be asking too much.
It just so happens the upholstery guy suggested I bring it back and he'd need 5 hours. Okay so more likely overnight. Just in case, I want to be prepared so I can buy the 2002 wheel. The part number of concern is 2L3Z-3600-EAA. It shows it as for a 2002-2004 Excursion. It doesn't make sense they would say it doesn't work for the 2001 if it's only the wheel. Is this a game Ford is playing? lol
It seems this part would work if I use my existing clock spring and cruise buttons (if they are different). I don't see anything that looks like a clock spring in the picture. It looks identical to mine without the unsightly wear spot on the top.
I dropped the Ex at the upholstery shop this morning. The owner, very nice said he stands behind his work but this is clearly a material issue. His first idea of a fix was to sand the leather and die it to return it's beautiful uniform look but might only last 2-3 years. We all know what that means (maybe 1 year). I said I wanted it done right with the best material so he doesn't have to do this again. We agreed on a price of $150 to replace the leather with some material with a thicker grain. Supposedly BMW material. The color might be slightly off but the plastic in the interior even has variance in colors. I anticipate the color to be nearly unnoticeable.
I still plan to buy the 2002 wheel and keep it should this new material fail, it's an easy swap. I can always sell a good used steering wheel for a decent return.
I used a company outside of Dallas to take a wheel I bought off eBay that was in bad shape and make it really nice. I didn't pay any attention to what year it was and I had no issues. I used my electronics.

That turned out really nice! CariD is the reseller if B&I accessories and they have those. I kinda like the feel of the leather. If this next go-around doesn't work out, I'll probably follow your lead.
Yea I understand wanting leather. I just like the certainty of the wood when I'm having to back up or maneuver quickly. The company that did this for me followed my instructions exactly and I highly recommend them.

They did a beautiful job! I am curious of a few ??
Is there a seam where the wood portion wraps around the wheel?
Approx. what did it cost, and who is the company?
