Blinker issues

Hi guys, I have a 2003 F-450 with blinker/brake light issues.

Hazards seem to work fine

blinkers work 10% of the time

the blinker steering release works with no issue

The blinkers dont blink
occasionally they will work fine but only for a few seconds. Apparently the brake lights also don’t light up when the peddle is pressed

any ideas?

Sounds like the turn signal relay needs replacing, above the ODBII port and to the right (tough to get to) 1 inch by 1 inch black or blue cube plugged in to a relay box that is rectangular in shape with a cover on it. It's just above the heater floor vent and the same relay also controls the hazard or break lights too, can't remember. Part number should be on it, what you described is classic symptoms of that part going out, had it happen to me.

wow ok I figured since the hazards still worked it’d be something else. That’s an easy fix!

Ya, it was making my life miserable until I was talking to a Ford dealer diesel mechanic that used to wrench for a company I drove big 18 for and he told me what to do. I hope that's your problem too, I thought it was way to easy also and was skeptical but tried it anyway and it worked. If I remember correctly, the part from my local Ford dealer was about $26.00.

Need to flush and fill the blinker fluid reservoir. Make sure you use a good quality blinker fluid like Lucas.

Sorry, I don't mean to Hijack the topic or anything Just thought I'd ask a quick question some-what related. What (on a 2005) would cause the flasher relay to click with nothing activated key off, on, and/or running while it's doing it the exterior lights nor dash indicators light up. Brake lights and turn signals work fine at all times. Could that be a bad flasher relay (AutoZone electronic version, rather new, had to replace one when it buzzed instead of clicked not long ago), or something more "truck side"?

Thanks in advance

I'm not so sure about that one, never heard of it. The only thing I can think of is a short in the switch for activating your hazards, they should work without the key on. Do you turn them on and off a lot? Maybe the switch is worn or is getting condensation in it.

not really, actually I hardly ever use them... when I do turn the hazards on they work fine though. just would like to figure out why, I've already had to bypass the internal relay for the heated mirrors in the fuse box. didn't know if it was some other non serviceable part going bad or something.... it's just an annoying sporadic click every now and then, sounds like your keys hitting each other dangling from the ignition, but it's not; Some times it's just 1 click, other times it could be 3 or 4...random

oh well, Thanks none-the-less.....

Ugh not a relay issue

So I replaced the relay twice... worked for 30 seconds, hazards work, running lights work, still no brake lights, no blinkers... I checked a lot of wires and everything looks fine to me... I did notice under the dash where the blinker relay mount under the dash is that it’s a bit rusty in there which reallllllllly worries me.. anyone have an idea on if it grounds out threw the mount? Any other ideas??? I feel I’m just waiting to get rear ended

I would check for connectors that got rusty from moisture dripping on it, maybe a spade terminal in there causing an intermittent short from a screw hole in your firewall. It's a long shot (you said it was around that relay box?), either way see what's going on with the rust, maybe a small telescoping inspection mirror to look around under your dash. You can pick one up for a few bucks, mine has come in real handy when my cell phone disappears in my truck.
