Too bad you never said anything about your truck being a 02 till near the end. I assumed you were 94-97 since that is how the thread was started, oh well. There is a way for 99+ to increase the fuel pressure but it costs about $400. Check out Diesel Innovations web site they have the fuel pressure regulator you need.
I sort'a got lost in all the posts on the 10k mod.
I have throughly read the directions from F0rdF0rever on his site but see they're for 94-97.
I have a '03 7.3 PSD, can the 10k mod be done on it?
If so, please set me straight on the how-to's.
I already have the resistor and shrink tube.
Hey FOrd FOrever
i know this is an old thread but i have a question.
On the Fpr mod you say to use a #4 allen head fine screw, so what is the BB i keep reading about? is it what i think, like for a bb gun, or do i need to do as you have posted?
Thank you for any help form youself or anyone else who may have an answer for this.
They serve the same purpose, to shim the spring. Yes a BB from a BB gun will work. You are looking to shim the spring by about 3/16". But make sure you check the fuel pressure with a gage before and after. You do not want to over pressurize the fuel system, just bring it up to between 60-75psi.
P.S. Sorry to hear about the friefighter murder, and attempted murder there in Lexington. I have some friends there and they told me about it cuz I an a FF too.
Thanks for the reply, just finshed putting my bb in.
What would be the right type of guage to read this regulator i am assuming not a typical tire guage?
Yeah they had a large service for her with firefighters from as far as Texas attending.
I just hope the man who did it gets just what he deserves
(FTE RULES)
Thanks for any and all replys and help, you guys are great!
Birddog, yes you could use a tire gage as a down and dirty method of checking. A more accurate gage would be a hydraulic pressure gage that reads accurately below 100 psi. I bought a schrader valve to NPT adapter at the local hydraulic hose/fitting supplier and attached it to my my gage. then I screw it onto the FPR schrader valve. A fluid filled gage reduces the pressure fluctuations at the needle and makes it easier to read. You want to check the fuel pressure at idle with a warm engine.
I installed a permanent liquid filled fuel pressure gauge on my PSD to monitor the fuel pressure at all times. My "02" runs at 70-75 lbs. without any mods.
I havent checked the pressure yet.
I did the 10k and fpr shim and cleaned the fpr screen all at the same time and i can defintely tell a differance in get up and go, but have yet dto do any real driving. i will let you know what kind of results that i get.
Also i have read in a post from Quadzilla that he has put 2 bbs in his FPR, i only have 1 so like i said i would like to know what pressure im at.
Dumb question here, maybe its been answered but I didnt see it. Can this mod be done on a 2000 and if so are the is the plug and wire colors the same. Just looking for cheap ways to improve performance. Thanks
unluckylow, yes the 10k can be done on all 7.3l PSD's.The 99+ engines have the sensor located on the l. head, look on the valley side not the exhaust side, just froward of the lifting eye. Unfortunately I do not know the wire colors.
I did this 10k mod to my '03 f350 and it is great. I idle ~300 rpm more than before and it is smooth, no choppiness. My fuel mileage is better, not sure how much more yet but defintely better than .5 mpg reported by older trucks, more like 2+ but will have a better idea after this tank full of diesel goes away.
I'm thinking the idle is smooth on my '03 due to changes since '99 to the computer program. Maybe it tries to compensate for the 10k. Not sure, just know its GREAT!!!!!!!!!
As far as directions for the mod, very easy and very fast to do. Search the 7.3 forum will find correct color wires, etc. I used a jewelers screwdriver to push the wires into the "face" one wire into the "right eye" and one in the "mouth" as I looked at the female portion of the plug.
