Hi
This is my first post ever anywhere. LOL.
I have a 1979 f150 2wd. 4 speed overdrive...
I have just installed a new redhead steering gear and need to torque the pitman arm. I am wondering how best to do that and not damage the steering box.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Yes off the jack stands and setting on the ground. Remember to have the lock washer installed. Turn the wheels all the way left lock. That way the steering stops for the knuckles will help provide more (hold strength) when you are torqueing the nut in the tightening direction. What torque setting are you using? ...X... amount of Ft Lbs? The manual says 230-310 Nm (170-230 ft. lbs.) Also found this...Pitman Arm (called a "Steering Gear Sector Shaft Arm" in Fordspeak) Retaining Nut (retains to Sector Shaft): 200 ft lbs.
