1992 7.3 idi difficulties

Hello, I am experiencing difficulties while I am trying replace head gaskets in a 1992 Ford F-250 with an international 7.3 idi non turbo. I took both valve covers off and started pulling the rocker arms and push rods. I have all of them out except for the last 2 on the passenger side. The last 2 towards the cab are hitting on something to do with the air unit I believe. I obviously have the motor still in the truck. The box does not appear to be able to be removed in any sensible way. And I would rather not remove the motor or unbolt it to tilt the motor if there is anyway to avoid it.

That airbox cover has screws around the seam holding it together and also two nuts top and bottom on the firewall, 7/16 deep well socket iirc.

Then you can remove the cover and they should clear. If not the evaporator can be removed easily.

That black box with the heat shield pulled down from it is what the push rods are hitting.

That's a vacuum resivore, iirc it has a screw or two and then comes off. If not you can pull the whole cover as I mentioned

If you can't remove that smaller one the arrows show the location of the firewall nuts for half the whole cover.

I looked and could not take it off. It did appear to look as it could be removed but had not nuts or bolts. I tried prying on it a little but did not want to break it. I will try the firewall nuts when i get back. But I also looked at taking that apart and couldn’t quite although I was running late and had to leave. Thank you for your help.

on my 93 it is Glued on or plastic welded it is part of the housing ....not removable unless you destroy it.

best to just loosen the motor mounts and rock the engine or just remove the Plenum ...the installed the 7.3 with a shoe horn.

the newer years like 2006 were held in place by 2 bolts.

It does not come off. I’m gonna try taking the head bolts out and moving the head enough to get them out.

If it helps, when I did my head's with the motor in the truck I took a couple rubber bands and banded up the pushrods and head bolts that would not come out due to that box and removed the head with them still banded to the head. I lifted each slightly so it would clear the block surface.
Just DON'T FORGET to put them back in their respective places and band them up above the head mounting surface before you put the head back in.
I did use a hoist to raise/lower my head's so I didn't have to try to get everything aligned while supporting #100+ of head and manifold.

as Rustyblade says... the heads are heavy and a cherry picker sure is a good idea.

Hey another problem. I was taking the manifolds off on the driver side today. I got all the bolts off except for 1. U cannot even see it from the top, and the bottom there is about an inch hole you can see it through and it is not straight with the hole. I tried as small as a quarter inch with 2 swivels trying to increase my chances but I can’t get on it. A stubby wrench I may be able to get on it but wouldn’t be able to grasp the wrench through the hole. Any solutions? I couldn’t turn the manifold even with just 1 bolt in either

You don't have to remove the exhaust manifold. Just take the nuts off the y pipe and let it hang down.

When I did mine in the truck I left the manifolds on so I had a good hand hold as I removed them by hand by myself and then got help to set them back on.
