78 f250 with dual tanks. Occasionally looses power and runs rough like the choke is on. Does this for about 30 seconds and goes to normal. If I put in neutral and coast it runs and revs fine. New fuel pump.carb rebuilt a couple years back. New plugs. Wires etc. Im pretty sure its not getting enough fuel on these occasions. Because it runs normal in neutral. Choke is not on as I have checked. Any ideas?
If it does it worse under load it would suggest more of a fuel starvation issue. a restriction somewhere, low float level or something. .
If it does it at any random time the first thing I'd do is try another ECM if you still have the factory durashart set up. those are ALWAYS suspect anytime you start having unexplained issues.

thanks for the info. I really need a local old Ford mechanic around here.
look on the driver side inner fender . see if there's box with a couple plug ins with wires there by the hood hinge. that would be the ECM. unless it's been converted your pickup would have come with this ignition.
It would be worth trying a new one, if you don't have a spare you should get one anyway. failures are common and often leave you dead in the water.
Had the exact same problem with mine. Went through several mechanical pumps from the parts stores and even a genuine carter reman pump. Tried replacing all the lines, hoses, filters as well. Cleaned and coated both tanks. Replaced both fuel caps. Rebuilt the carb (which was two years old) and reset the floats. Replaced the ignition box thinking it may be an ignition problem.
As much as I didn't want to do it, I installed an electric pump as a ditch effort and the issue is fixed.
Fuel filters, tanks need cleaned out, suspect a fuel tank pick up tube filter sock clogged. Possible vacuum leak, loose wire, carb need rebuilt due to crap from tank has it dirtied up. When is the last time you changed the duel tank switch valve back on the cross member?

I havnt done any of that. Just got truck back from shop. Had a sticky valve guide. Was thinking that caused the issues I was having. But its still acting up on occasion. Also had new carb and intake installed. truck started running a bit rough for 30 seconds today. Shortly after I ran one tank dry. Switched to other tank immediately. Ran good for 5 minutes then acted up again. Common sense tells me crap in tank getting through the filter?

Here's a picture of what he was talking about. If you have this on your drivers side inner fender then pick up a spare and change it out. Keep the old one in case
your problem persists then at least you'll have a spare for the reasons he explained. If it does fix the problem you'll still want to get another for a spare. It will save
you a tow if it goes out on you while your out and is an easy way to trouble shoot it by changing it out while you're on the road and have this kind of trouble some
where down the road.
