Transmission Woes

I have a 2000 7.3 PSD I bought new and LOVED until about 90 days ago (92,000 miles) when the front pump seal blew in the 4R100 transmission. A local dealer replaced the seal and tourque converter, and all was fine until last week (6,000 miles since the repair) when it started slipping (just like in neutral) at low speed or stops. If I go to reverse and back it usually engages, it never slips if I put it in 1st and upshift manually, and it never slips in reverse. The dealer says it has nothing to do with their repair, and they won't even touch it unless I agree to pay for a tear down. I complained to Ford CRC to no avail.

The truck is used mainly for long distance cruising between Kentucky and Denver. I rarely tow anything, and I would like to keep this truck a long time. I was just starting to think about a few performance mods when all this happened, and if I have any money left when it is over I will probably be back for advice on goodies!

I hear a lot about sensor and software problems and am hoping it may be something like that, but I don't know the best way to go about a proper diagnosis. I will probably post this over in the transmission area as well, and would appreciate any and all advice. Thanks!

Problem Solved!

Well, the problem appears to be solved! Total cost: $1.99 - must go down as the cheapest tranny repair in history! Thanks 78fordman from the transmission forum!

It is not unusual to drive through flooded streets around here, so the suggestion about electrical connections made sense. Since I had also heard about "strange" problems related to the range sensor, I removed that connector and sprayed the contacts, then filled it with dielectric grease. The problem immediately disappeared! It may just be my imagination (and jubilation), but it even feels like it is shifting a little quicker and firmer. Yesterday I got back under the truck and gave every accessible connector the same treatment.

Two Ford dealers and two independent shops told me point blank it was shot and would need a rebuild without even suggesting (or knowing about) this simple check first.

Maybe my experience will help someone else avoid a huge and possibly unncessary repair bill.

Thanks!
