Transmission Woes
The truck is used mainly for long distance cruising between Kentucky and Denver. I rarely tow anything, and I would like to keep this truck a long time. I was just starting to think about a few performance mods when all this happened, and if I have any money left when it is over I will probably be back for advice on goodies!
I hear a lot about sensor and software problems and am hoping it may be something like that, but I don't know the best way to go about a proper diagnosis. I will probably post this over in the transmission area as well, and would appreciate any and all advice. Thanks!
It is not unusual to drive through flooded streets around here, so the suggestion about electrical connections made sense. Since I had also heard about "strange" problems related to the range sensor, I removed that connector and sprayed the contacts, then filled it with dielectric grease. The problem immediately disappeared! It may just be my imagination (and jubilation), but it even feels like it is shifting a little quicker and firmer. Yesterday I got back under the truck and gave every accessible connector the same treatment.
Two Ford dealers and two independent shops told me point blank it was shot and would need a rebuild without even suggesting (or knowing about) this simple check first.
Maybe my experience will help someone else avoid a huge and possibly unncessary repair bill.
Thanks!
