My bro. has a 96 ranger 3.0 5 speed 4x4, and he blew reverse out. He was in a ditch and was trying to rock it out, and apparently slammed it in reverse while the wheels were spinning forward.
So here's what I'm wondering, can we get a 4x2 trannie and swap gears? (Can't find 4x4 trannies around here). The output shaft is different on the 4x4 compared to the 4x2, right?
These probably aren't the right names for the gears but hopefully you get the picture.
Reverse, reverse main shaft gear and the idler are toothless. 5th gear is chipped slightly.
He ordered gears online and they aren't the right ones. Apparently he got the updated R1 gears🤦♂️
So this is for all you who may stumble upon this thread in years to come. According to the guy at the junkyard the 4.0 has its own bolt pattern, the 3.0 and the 2.3 have the same bolt pattern, but the starters are on opposite sides.

You are incorrect. 2.3 3.0 and 4.0 all have different bell housings. To answer you question about the gears, if you replace the gear with one from a 2wd trans of the same motor size, it should interchange. the 2.3 and 3.0 have nearly identical internals IIRC. Technically the M5ODR1 behind the newer 4.0 is definitely different internally. I found out the hard (expensive) way.
So the bolts don't even line up on the 2.3 and 3.0? Cuz the four guy at the junkyard said that they had the same bolt pattern, but the starters are opposite sides each other.
I went ahead and bought a two wheel drive transmission last week, and I'm going to pick it up today. Hopefully we can just change all the gears out into the 3.0 tranny.
