These the right hammer locks?
I want to get a pair of hammer locks. I currently have a Stainless Steel 316 Bow Shackle 5/8", but the working load is only 3850 lbs.
Are these the right ones to get?

Yes those will work. I bought these. I don’t know the difference but they are rated a little higher. Good seller also. They can be a pain to get started. I used a ball joint press to get the pin seated in the collar then hammered it through.

I read folks were grinding the pin to a point on one end to give an easier start then slamming it home with a hammer

I pressed mine together with a beefy 6" C-Clamp. Much easier than using a chunk of wood to prop the link up and then beating with a hammer.

What is the location and purpose for these parts?

I bought a set of these:
They are 1/2 in. despite the picture showing 3/8 in.
They went together with just a few firm blows with a hammer, no grind, no issues.
They aren't painted though, so I put a couple heavy coats of black Rustoleum on them first.

Guys too scared to grind down the hitch loops to use normal safety hooks.

This is what I did, it didn't take much.

Absolutely. Oh, and probably people that are not interested (or too scared) in modifying a trailer that they rent or borrow. So yeah, good one.

Modify the truck hitch not the trailer.
Ford's hitch is a dumb design either way.

This doesn't permit normal chain hooks to grab?

Gotcha, thought you were saying to grind the safety catches on the chain hooks... I've seen others suggest that in the past. And we do agree that the design is dumb.

The problem I have is the spring clips that prevent the hooks from coming off wouldn't close. I did some grinding on the bottom of the face where it extends down under the holes and now they work fine.

Nope. Either clearance that lip on the bottom or do the shackles like people keep suggesting.
