I bought a 2000 f350 SuperDuty, used a few weeks ago. I am new to trucks and towing. The truck has a factory tow package. I bought a u haul brake control with a wiring harness that plugs directly under the dash. I was told it was easy to install all the wires are color coded. I hooked up and then hooked up to the TT. I get a signal telling me the electronic brake is working but their is no TT hooked up. Can anyone please point me in the right direction for troubleshooting this?
Jim,
I wish you would have asked about brake controllers before you bought the U-Haul and you would have been steered toward a Jordan Ultima or as a minimum, the Prodigy. If you tow very light, you will probably be ok because you have an F350 but you will likely grow to dislike ramp/time based controls. As for your specific question, they all work similar but have different trouble shooting codes so I would refer you back to the installer and/or instruction manual. Not sure who makes the U-haul but I'm willing to bet it's another manufacture with their (U-Haul) label on it. Hopefully somebody else can chime.
If you matched color for color when hooking the controller up that may be your problem. Check the instructions sheet carefully and make sure that what the wire does is what you have it doing.
Some makes caution you that the color match is not alyaws correct. The Ford supplied harness has each wire labeled as to its function, the U-Haul should have the same info.
I think the Draw tite and U-haul are the same. I have the draw tite and hate it. The light coming on when braking is normal even when no trailer is hooked up. I just ordered a Prodigy, have heard nothing but good things about it.
Draw-Tite is ok--have used one for several years and several trucks. Small dot light shows on digital readout when brake is pressed and no trailer connected. Numerals only show when using trailer. It should have adjustments for how hard AND how quickly the brakes apply. It also shows "ER" when something is wrong.
Different posts on this and other forums seem to lean toward the Prodigy, then the Jordan. I am sure they are excellent units.
The Draw-Tite I have must be an earlier model. It has no readout, only the light that comes on when you brake. It does change color the harder you brake. What I don't like about it, it is very hard to adjust so it doesn't jerk your neck when in stop and go driving, like a long line at stop lights.
Maybe for another $150 +/-, you ought to get a better controller. I believe the Prodigy is under $150 and it will do everything but cook you breakfast. Or go back to U-Haul and tell them you need a better one.
Brake controllers are one item you want to be completely confident with.
