Ok...so I am not up to date on all this new tech stuff. Seems my 2020 F150 XLT Auto Stop/Start works sometimes and other times it does not. I know there is a button to cut it on and off. But why does it work sometimes and other it does not? This morning sitting in an hour long traffic snarl it wasn't working and then all of a sudden it did. Thinking of getting a device...the Range disabler device or something similar. Why does it work sometimes and not all the time?
Because it is based on a multitude of parameters for it to cut out the engine and restart it. These parameters include:
Engine temp
Battery charge
External temp
Frequency of braking
Effort of braking
And a crapload of other parameters.
Basically it won't cut the motor unless the truck is warmed up, it isn't too cold out, and you come to a full and complete stop with decent pressure on the brake pedal. If you let up on the pedal it will re-start, and then won't shut off again for several minutes.
So, sitting in stop-and-go traffic, it would likely have shut the engine off while you were sitting one time, and then not the next because the battery status was too low from having to restart the truck. Or, you might have been barely pressing on the pedal to hold a stop, which isn't enough pressure to shut the engine off.

Pretty much nailed it. I just bought a 2020 F-150. The auto start/stop feature did not start working until just over 2000 miles on the odometer. Reason: engine charging. Apparently the truck sat a while on the dealers lot and the battery was not up to a full charge. Now after the vehicle is warmed up it works every time I come to a stop.
I haven't taken possession of my 2020 yet so I have no experience with the stop and start but what happens when it's hot out and the ac is running will it still shut down at a stop light.
Yes it will still work, the engine will shut off but the A/C will continue to work, in fact all the functions should still work as if the truck is running.
my advice, either let it do it’s thing or get the habit of shutting it off. To me now, it’s just like putting on my seat belt. I just hit the button.
good luck.
I bought the plug in obdii auto start / stop eliminator. I hated it auto stopping, I didn't want to do modifications to the system, as I do check it monthly to ensure all is working as it should.
With air and heat on it will not shut off. If it is off turn your fan control and it will start. I am also learning.
Actually....Cabin Heater Coolant Pump
Vehicles equipped with the 2.7L EcoBoost engine or the 3.5L EcoBoost engine have the auto start-stop feature as standard equipment, which includes a cabin heater coolant pump. The cabin heater coolant pump provides coolant to the heater core whenever the HVAC system requests heat and the vehicle is in auto start-stop mode. The PCM sends a PWM signal to control the cabin heater coolant pump. Refer to the Owner's Literature, Unique Driving Characteristics for full auto start-stop enabling/disabling information.

Is that the way the HVAC system works all the time or just when in auto stop mode. Using chiller system would be a lot more efficient than running a evaporator and heater core.
I thought I would not like it when I first had it on my 2019 F-150. Personally I don't mind the auto stop/start feature. How much gas you save is probably minuscule but hey, with rising gas prices any $$ saved is $$ saved.

Just wait until you replace the starter, let us know how that expense works out. Auto stop bs is guberment hogwash.
Mine has just started working some of the time. Guess maybe the warming temps have something to do with it. It's kinda strange but I guess I'll get used to it. I drove a Chevy Cruze rental car that had it on a long road trip. There was no way to disable it in that car, at least not that I could find, but I was used to it by the end of the trip.
I think if you have it on defrost only the engine will not shut off. I unplugged the wire at the brake control module and it does not shut off now, its been fine all winter like that.
I saw a video this morning and a Ford technician plugged a round trailer light plug in to the female connector and it stopped the Auto SS. My 2020 XLT only has the small 4 pin trailer connector so I tried doing the same thing with a 4 pin male connector. I thought it solved the SS issue but it didn't. Guess I'll just get in the habit of pressing the button on the dash or splurge for the OBD auto start / stop eliminator.
