I just went to 37s over stock and now I want to get the power back to somewhat normal. If i get a programer will that be the cheaper route.. or should I just regear. I will probally do both in the long run. If i get the programer will it be enough power to feel or should I just get froggy and do both right now.
f you have an auto i would regear now cause thats like pulling somewhat of a load all the time and the trans might now like it.... what do you have 4.10 or 3.73?
If you use something like a Superlift Truspeed to fix your speedo, you'll be a lot better off. Then get a programmer or a chip and you'll be lightin up those 37's in no time
I run 36's myself and i can say i didn't feel that much power loss from stock. After i ditched my SCMT for a chip...wow it's all power gain now
In general i think the PSD handles a larger tire more easily. Some of my past trucks (gassers) had some noticable power losses after a lift and big tires. They needed gears, but my PSD is stayin at 3.73s
I agree with with DC Special, and Deer Sniper, according to my math the 4.56 will bring your RPM's back to where they were with stock tires and the 3.73's. A set of 4.88's will bring you close to where the RPM would be with stock tires & 4.11 gears. So you would gain some off the line power compared to stock if you went 4.88. A 3 or 4 position chip will give you more bang for the buck compared to a programmer. The truspeed will correct the speedo but do very little for the poor engine that is constantly bogged down with 37's and 3.73's. In fact with the 4.56 and the 37's your speedo will be very close to reading correctly again and you will not need a truspeed. Not to mention you will get better fuel mileage, & cooler trans temps since the engine will be operating in its intended RPM range, not lugging it all the time.
BTW what truck & mods do you have, this would help a lot.
I could be wrong, but I don't think that changing gears will do anything for the speedo.......the reading it taken at the rear diff if I'm not mistaken.
When you calculate out gear ratio changes and how if effects RPMs take in to account that the stock tires are 31.6" and most 37" tires measure around 36.7"........which it roughly a 5" change in diameter.
I have no engine mods yet. I am using nittos I read an article where they said they measure to true 37 but that dont say much because by next year they will be 36s. But anyway If I could get a chip or something I will have more power but is it going to be an bandaid on the problem or should I just get to the meat of the problem and regear. Also I have a hard time getting into the diff with out putting lockers or something so Is it going to be a $400
somewhat fixer or a $2000 fixer for gears and lockers.
