Temperature Sensor at Hot with Ignition on

351W in a '53 F100

I know this topic has been beat to death, but the more I read, the more I get confused. After a long winter nap, I put my battery in the truck and started it up. All was great, started right up, no issue with this...but I noticed right away, after starting, my cluster temperature gauge went from cold to mid, and then just slowly creaped to hot and stayed there all in about 1 minute of starting.

I have a Sniper EFI installed, which has its own temp gauge (100% seperate from my stock gauge sensor) This was working correclty on the sniper hand held reader so I know that I don’t have a problem with overheating. The EFI started at about 64deg, slowly increased to ~180, the T-state opened and, I could feel warm water now going to the radiator, and the sniper sensor read 180 pretty constant.

But back to the stock gauge...when i was at temp looking at the EFI temperature read back, the cluster gauge is now pegged at Hot. Both the sensor and gauge are new from Mid Fiify and worked great last year. I do have the sensor in the T-state housing so alittle delay in readying, but nothing to be concerned about being my EFI is in the intake manifold and is more important for the ECU.

I did pull the wire from the sensor, and the gauge at the cluster would drop to zero. I measured the sensor (ohms to ground) and it was about 95 ohms when the at 180deg on the EFI readback. So it seems like the sensor is good. I also measured the wire going to the sensor and I am getting 12v from the wire to ground.

I did do some wiring under my dash over the winter…could a bad or lose ground at the gauge cause this to happen? For it to read hot all the time?

I had wired the gauge following Mid Fifity instructions....and it was working..

I have had the same issue with an Autogauge temp gauge. In my case I found I accidentally bumped the negative or ground wire loose from the back of the gauge. So that is where I would look first on yours, make sure your - connection is still connected to ground on the back of your gauge.
