Engine temp gauge

My temperature gauge is pegged at cold and I can't seem to find out how to fix it. I haven't had any problems with overheating but would like to know how to get the gauge to register just in case. Any recommendations?

Find the sensor on the engine. It will have a white/red or a red/white wire going to it. Take the wire off the sensor, and with the key in run but the engine off, ground the sensor wire. The gauge should peg all the way cold or hot. Then take the sensor wire off ground and let it hang in the air and touch nothing. The gauge should swing full scale the opposite way. If this test works, then the gauge and the wiring are are good, and the sensor is bad.

where is this sensor at? only thing i can find is the coolant temp sending unit where the heater hoses come off the intake manifold, and i have replaced that. Is there a separate sensor?
