92 Ranger 3.0 L. Temp sensor gauge on dash constantly is nil. Pulled the wire off of the sensor at thermostat and when cold ohms read 75 +/-. Engine warm read about 10 +/- ohms. I take it sensor is ok. With ignition on and a 12 v. test light connected to ground and the sensor wire the test light has a slight glow. Should there be a 12 v. reading at this wire? Also I noticed that when connected to the test light the temp sensor gauge went up to about normal temperature. After I get this one straightened out I will then proceed to see what is wrong with the fuel gauge reading EMPTY when it is full of gas. All other gauges read normal i.e. oil pressure and voltmeter. Thanks for all replies. Been since 01-2008 since I was on here because of a busted canshaft gear. That was in my 88 Ranger with the 2.0 L.
Connected a wire from sensor wire to ground and then turned on ignition. Gauge did go all the way to hot and then I turned the ignition off...what next? By the way thanks for the reply...sounds like you have done this diagnosis before. I do have a shop manual for an 88 Ranger but it doesn't list the 3.0. Only the 2.0 L 4 cyl, 2.3 L I-4 and the 2.9 L V-6. I think the electrical should be the same. I read about checking the IVR (instrument voltage regulator)...yikes the instrument cluster must come out???????????? Waiting for your reply.
Not positive, but i think a 92 is wired from ignition switch to gauge fuse to gauges. IE 12 volts. The IVR went away around 1990 i believe. I dont have 92 diagrams to look at.
The closest diagrams I have to yours are for my 95 Taurus. They show 74 ohms from the sensor cold & 10 ohms hot so you're good there.
The gauge swings to full hot when you ground the wire, so the gauge is working.
You did ground it somewhere on the engine, correct? The oil pressure gauge is working, so the engine ground strap "should" be ok.
Dont you hate it when theres nothing wrong except it's not working.
I need to have my eyes examined...what I thought was 6 ohms at hot was actually 6 with that little k beside of it...looks like I'm headed to the parts store tomorrow for a sending unit...
