Towing heavy

I am kicking around the possibility of getting a 14k deck over trailer (I figured I could haul sleds, cars, lumber and occasionally my 9,000lbs track loader), and figured I'd check the tow rating for my v10 4x4 Excursion, and saw it was only 10k or slightly less with 3.73s. That strike me as much lower than expected and in the half-ton range, quite a bit less than many new 1/2 tons as a matter of fact.
If I occasionally load up such a trailer will it completely overwhelm the Excursion? How about if I just get close to the 10k limit?

The later excursion were increased to 11000 lbs due to an increase in size of the trailer hitch bolts. Several have done that to their early rigs to get the little extra capacity. That being said, legally you are still limited by the gross combined vehicle weight rating for the vehicle. If ever you were in an accident especially if it involved loss of life, while overloaded you would be skewered legally.

that is going to depend on the state laws. In many places, only axle loads matter, and a heavy trailer is going to have brakes, so over GC should be safe.

I would have to replace my hitch anyways, so the heavier bolts then anyways would be very doable.

This is always a debate. I tow a camper that probably weights over 9000 lbs loaded. I haven't gone through mountains with it yet, but so far it has done great.

So can you setup the Excursion to tow heavier than the rating safely? Probably. Will the legal people care? Probably not.....so just be careful about the laws.

I wouldn't do it for any distance in stock form. If you plan to tow heavy....
1. Front and rear sway bars.
2. Firmer rear springs and possibly air bags
3. Brake upgrade.
4. Bigger Trans Cooler
5. Swap out the 3.73s for 4.56s (if stock tires).....steeper if you are running bigger tires.
6. Replace the stock y-pipe with an aftermarket or go with headers
7. Get a 5Star tune to help a little with power, but mostly to have a much better shift strategy for the transmission.
8. Maintenance, Maintenance, Maintenance. If you are going to push the vehicle limits make sure everything is up to par.
