Brake On/Off Switch and EEC-IV

I'm doing a '91 460 swap into my 1980 Bronco. Currently cleaning up the wiring harness, which came out of a truck with an E4OD. The 460 will mate with my existing C6 transmission.

Pin 2 of the ECM is for a brake on/off input. This light green wire runs right to the firewall connector.

Does anyone know if the ECM uses the BOO input on pin 2 to do anything other than speed control? I see if listed in my van EVTM under the speed control section. I'm not adopting the '91 cruise and my '80 cruise isn't currently functional and I don't see where I'm going to put in the work to correct it. I was unsure if it may be used for any sort of idle air speed solenoid calculation? I'm understood that just to be done via VSS but I can't find much info out there on it.

I'd like to remove the wire if possible - one less in the harness. Just fishing to see if anyone knows if its functions extend outside of cruise control.

Sorry for the omission.

I am planning on using the computer that came out of the van. It was a '91 460 motorhome with E4OD transmission. I am keeping the existing C6/208 tranny/t-case. I don't foresee ever installing an E4OD in this truck so I don't mind removing associated wires.

others will probably chime in...

off the top of my head the BOO input would disengage speed control and unlock the torque converter, neither of which would apply to your combo. I don't know of any other engine management influence...

My suggestion would be to use a 460/C6 or manual computer as a better match to what you are doing, and re-pin to match whatever you find. I would think you could find a refurbished unit. Sticking with something from 91 will help you avoid part mismatches as there are subtle changes year to year that will give you headaches. I imagine the the computer you have will run, but it will not be happy. It will make any diagnostics more difficult, and may have running problems out of the gate.

My 2 cents.

Thanks for the input on the BOO. I know it is only one wire and wouldn't be terrible difficult to splice into the brake switch. I'm just on a cleanup mission and was curious about this wire.

I know the computer will be unhappy with the lack of tranny and spit out a bunch of codes. My long-term goal is to get a C6 or manual trans computer and adopt a MIL. I'm going to keep that wiring, but there's not much value in hooking up a MIL now because it'll be on 24/7.

Not to advertise, but I know a guy with a 35K mile, 1991 460 E-350 computer that can be available for the right trade.

Cruise control is a separate computer, nothing in EEC-IV.
Brake on/off (BOO), does unlock/lock Torque Converter.

There is much more going on in EEC-IV with trans, etc. You might have to wire the pins so it thinks its in neutral.

Either get the right computer for you combo, or tune and configure your EEC-IV for use with the C6.

Thanks guys. The internet has a ton of advice for whether it's easy to do what I want with the E4OD/C6 or if it's next to impossible. But, what you've said has reenergized me to look for an appropriate computer. I'm comfortable repinning - just have to make sure i have good documentation. And I can eliminate issues with the trans controller, MLPS, etc. It is the better way to go, I've just been dragging my feet on making the investment since I have what is supposed to be a good computer.

I wish there was more info on appropriate codes for C6 and manual transmission computers. I found a good listing on fordfuelinjection that looks like I am after codes MOT and Z2Z. My current computer is a W2T. The other codes - 8SE, DAD, and J2C1 - aren't meshed with transmissions. I see a few J2C1 computers on the internet, but the sellers just indicate it's for an A/T transmission.

If it helps...

The E4OD became the "standard" automatic heavy duty trans in 1989, replacing the C6. The 460 went EFI in 1988. So, if you can find any 1988 computer for a 460 with an auto it will be set up for a C6 by default.

The C6 was available by special order until the end of the OBS trucks in 1997.

Another thought to consider is using an aftermarket computer such as the offerings from Stinger Performance Might seem a bit expensive on the face of it, but might also be a great fit considering what you are doing.
