Any idea what would cause a headlight fire hot enough to melt the headlight but not crack the bulb? Anyone have any points to look for to identify any shorts in the 2000 Excursion v10? I thought the whole thing was going to go in flames yesterday but we got very lucky. Just took out the headlight, harness, and hood wire.
My guess is someone changed the stock bulb, wiring and or just screwed the pooch when reinstalling a stock bulb, the stock wire loom is adequetly protected if you run it in the factory location through the metal radaitor supports but a careless stuffing the wires or yanking on them can expose bare wire to metal causing a dead short.
but more then likely a aftermark bulb setup drawing to much current through old crusty wires over heated and you have fire.
Okay, that gives me a good starting point. I’ve had it for 2 years and only ran the stock bulbs but the socket was a replacement from previous. I’ll start poking around, the bulb survived though, which shocked me.
Anyone know what wiring harness hangs out beneath the drivers headlight wiring? I melted that too.
editing to add photos for fun factor and because I really appreciate the direction. I don’t want to sell the truck but with my three demon spawns inside with me at the time, I don’t want to risk that again.
