I have always like the excursion look and have been a life long Ford man. I recently had the chance to buy one at auction and got a good deal on it. Its a 2004 4x4 5.4 V8. with 190,000 miles on it. It has a decent exterior and a great interior. I was surprised how good of shape the seats were. My wife was wanting to get another ride for bad weather and I'm always down to get another toy. She wanted to get a small SUV, HA! I got the King of SUV's. The best part to me is its previous owner was the Department of Environmental Quality!
Welcome to the EX forum and family!
Congrats on the new wagon, it looks like it should clean up pretty well. My Aspen Green EX is also a former government rig, it's an XLT V-10 and used to belong to the Army Corpse of Engineers.
Tell us more about it, does it have all three rows of seats? Cloth, leather or vinyl? Carpets or rubber floor liner? Rear HVAC or no? I'm also curious about what gears that 5.4 4X4 has, I think they typically came with 4.10s but not sure.
This one came with only one back row seat. It has cloth seats and vinyl floors which is perfect for what we are using it for. I so far have upgraded the mirrors to the 08 mirrors My next upgrade is going to be a winch/bumper and a back bumper. Not sure what I have planned after that. I may switch the rims and tires for something bigger like a 285 or 305. Good thing is I have 3 f250/350 to play around with to see what I like on it. As far as the gearing I'm not sure what gears the axles have, I will find out and report back. I know it seems to run really good and gets up to speed better than I expected.
It has 4.10 gears on the axles and only has rear floor defrost. It is a special service vehicle, So I guess it was pretty base line. I'm not sure what all upgrades I will end up doing? I'm kinda open for suggestions on some things. I know immediate future has me sorting out some bugs. Rear hatch won't lock, door shows open at all times, and radio volume isn't responsive. So i'm in the process of trouble shooting those issues when I have time.
-The door latches I have WD-40 so not time to hunt the problem latch.
-The rear door won't lock with the key so I'm hoping it is gummed up and can be cleaned.
-Time for a new radio.
I would also like to gain some inches in the suspension but not looking for anything bigger than a couple inches. Being a 5.4 I don't want to rob any more power.
Just updating my progress
I was able to find a great deal on a ranch hand bumper. So I got it installed with a warm 12,000lb winch I had in the shop
next I was able to find some stock wheels to replace the older steel wheels I picked them up for $100
my next find for the X was a ranch hand rear bumper. It was a drop bumper that came off of a super duty so I had to do some modification to the bracket on the bumper to make it fit correctly as well as cut the drop off the bottom.
I upgraded the old headlights that put out about as much light as a candle. And bought some new ATS springs. X/Modded C for the front and tears. Went with Bilstein shocks.
overall I gain more height than I was hoping for. I ended up with around 4” in height added. I was hoping to end up around 2”.
I purchased some mastercraft mxt 315/75 r16 and had the front end aligned.
I then had to replace the stock lockouts which had seized and went with the warn premium locking hub.
I got everything done in time for 14” of snow to be dumped at the house. So I was able to put some snow miles in all week long.
My next project is to figure out why got some shake in the front end after the alignment and it is now rubbing on a full lock right hand turn on the leaf spring. I supper the alignment was not done properly but need some off days without snow to figure the issue out.
