74-78 firewalls
can any post pics of the two.
I have a 74 without a/c that i am restoring and a 78 parts truck.
the 74 did not come with a/c, but the 78 did and the wife now wants me to put the a/c into the 74.
just looking for what kind of work im getting into, before i start.
Just buy an aftermarket kit. It will be much easier to work on the engine (change plugs) without the monstrosity hanging in the engine bay. Much cleaner look.

The firewalls are the same with the exception of the hole for the AC. Make a template of the 78 and cut out the firewall in the 74
Ford390gashog
was hoping that was the case, but i have read where sometimes parts of firewall needs changing to make work.
i want to stay with factory air if i do it, makes it much easier for parts later.
that and i have most of those parts already
X2 fire wall is the same. X3 on make a pattern of the big hole on the one with a/c (once the box is out) and cut the other one for the monster box to go into. Also going be some rewiring of the main harness. Adding all the other little stuff, cutting (for vents) or swapping the complete dash. X4 That is another reason why an aftermarket set up is so nice and easy.
Replacement parts for the factory AC stuff is getting harder to come by too. The aftermarket kits will have better parts availability for a much longer time.
Now i'm rethinking the a/c system.
thanks for the links 77/79
i like the vintage air one, do you think it is possible to use the system for a non a/c truck but use the factory a/c dash.
i wasn't planning on a/c at all but the wife wants it
The after market ones I have seen have a separate box with ducts/ vents... I have a junked one that I just took out of a parts truck. My 74 has factory AC, and it looks like a big PIA to retrofit into a truck without. The dash would need to be swapped to make it easier, and yah you could prolly make a template to modify the non AC firewall... but it's a fair amount of work to do so I imagine...
Side question, my AC is functional but hath no R12, is there a kit to upgrade to R134 out there?

I would give vintage air a call and talk to them direct and explain what you would like to do. JMO in the past I have installed factory air in more Fords than the other big 3 when the stuff was fairly recent no big deal but different story today. I'm not a huge fan of aftermarket AC but things have gotten better. If you have a 100% intact parts truck with AC go for it, if not ask your wife if AC in 2022 would be ok. If not lean towards aftermarket. Again JMO.
X3 contact the manufacturer and see how their venting is directed. Could be a PITA to adapt? Yes you would be better off to swap to a already a/c vent dash if you just have to use the OEM vent placement.
The parts truck is not complete, but i do have the remaing needed components. The system was opened by someone else (who knows when) and left to the elements.
i like that the vintage air system does not take up a lot of room under the hood.
tried to call vintage air, noticed they are based in texas. They are probably affected by the winter storm. So i will try again later.
i am currently doing a frame off restore on the truck, so now is the time to do it easier.
