Fuel pump replacement

So, at 285k indicated, over 320k actual miles (oversized tires), I’m replacing my fuel pump as a preventative measure...plus my OEM pump is starting to show signs it’s getting pretty weak in terms of fuel pressure...drops under 60psi at anything other than idle.

After putting the new pump in the HFCM is there anything special I need to do to prime it other than cycling the key? I assume it’ll take more than the 3 cycles after a filter change.

Cycling it 3 or 4 times is all I did. And mine fired up as usual.
My pressure runs 61 at idle and never drops lower than about 58. Napa fuel pump.

Cool, thanks!

Over the last couple weeks I’ve seen mine drop to 55 a few times, whereas when I first put the pressure gauge in it would only go down to 57.

The whole reason for my concern was that at a full throttle run (yep, tuned, Innovative Xtreme Street tune) mine worked its way down to 45...hopefully this new Racor pump keeps it up higher.

Yah 45 psi any time is not real good. I've heard good things about Racor but don't know anyone personally that has one. Good luck.
Let us know how it does.

The OEM one is Racor.

Will do...they make the OEM pump for Ford so hopefully good to go. Will know in about 30 minutes

And...what a mess! Definitely took a diesel bath. 😂

Note to self...don’t do this with a full fuel tank. 🤦‍♂️

You got that Wright. You put a smile on my face with that, after a bad day. Not meaning anything hateful, but it was funny. Should have mention to prepare to get wet.

I would be insane if I didn’t do that.

Soooo...what’s the verdict? Well, at least fuel volume-wise, apparently I should’ve just left well enough alone. The new pump seems to allow pressure to drop slightly faster than my 300k mile pump I just took out did. 🤦‍♂️ Guess it’s fortunate I drive like a little old lady...mostly. 😬

As for longevity and not leaving me stranded by the side of the road, well...I guess I’ll try to convince myself this pump will last while my other one was about to crap out... 😂

Do you have any fuel system upgrades that might demand more fuel than stock?

I bought the Excursion with 85k miles on it, so it’s possible something was done with injectors before me, but I seriously doubt it. It seemed as stock as could be when I got it from the dealership. I know at some point someone did something with the regulator as when I installed a blue spring kit 5 years ago it seemed like someone had attempted to “solve” a leak with silicone. 🤦‍♂️As far as I know everything fuel-wise is stock except for the PCM and FICM tunes I’ve added.

Those tunes will demand more fuel.

That’s what I figured, but are they enough for the pressure to drop down to...or below...45psi with a good running stock pump?

Bismic has SRL+ (and I’d assume FICM tuning), but only drops to 50 at full throttle.

Soooo...is my gauge reading correctly? Is my new Racor fuel pump flowing less volume than the 300k mile pump I pulled out? Are the seals in the pressure regulator bad? Is the foot in my tank breaking apart? Will I actually have the discipline to go trail running today in the cold?

A lot of questions need to be answered... 😉
