I have recently changed the seat cover in my ‘73 but I noticed the seat came without the back cover. I see in LMC they have it for sale but since I am at the other side of the ocean, shipping will be very expensive. Question is, what material is it made of.? Cardboard, wood.? Is it upholstered with the same vinyl of the seat itself.? Maybe I can do one here.. Thanks.
I believe most regular cab seat backs had nothing. Now pretty sure on a Super Cab or Crew Cab the front seat in them had a cardboard backer. Sort of like the material the headliner was made of. Here is an option for a seat backer....
I am sure you can get some thin plywood and cover it with vinyl and get it on there to cover up the back of the seat.
Thanks Rich, very useful information.
Wow! That back seat looks awesome.!!! Nice place to hide your guns.!
Maybe if I can get the vinyl I will do the back seat.
Some bumps sides had a full vinyl seat cover. Here is a reference and a clean look. But again that is an earlier year truck. The truck in the pic and the cubby is from a 69-71. Now if you have a split folder bench (78/79 Bronco and SC), you had full vinyl seat covers.
The original seat in my 77 has an original cover and its painted close to the seat color. Held on with 6 large plastic push pins. Its dense "chipboard" (not corrugated like cardboard) about 1/8" (3mm) thick maybe a little less. I've seen very similar material in large sheets used in commercial and industrial packaging operations. Not something you'll find at local home improvement store at least not in the US. If you have a full service auto interior restoration shop they may have it or can order it for you as very similar materials are used in older automotive interiors so that's the first place I'd try.
My '76 and 79's are the same as mark8man said. it's the same type material as the headliners but I don't know what you call it or where to get it.
They sell a real thin fiberboard at lumber stores that has a smooth side you could use. I don't know what it's called but guys use it the make trunk filler panels on cars and it looks original.
440sixpack - think you are referring to Masonite. Frequently see it used as pegboard backing for workbenches to hang tools on...usually seen as either perforated for the tool board or unperforated.
I am making a back panel for the seat I just picked up for my 78 f150. I actually just bought the board from Lowes that 77&79 F250 mentioned. Also picked up a roll of black carpet from Auto Zone. I have used both materials to make rear shelves/speaker shelf for my classic cars. Looks awesome and easy to do. I use a roller and put a coat of indoor/outdoor carpet glue on the board after I have cut and fit it. Then on a flat surface roll the carpet out (back up), place the glued board and let it dry. I have cut the carpet to size and also folded over and glue the extra to the back for a smoother look. I picked up some automotive plastic push clips from Lowes to attach. Takes a little time when cutting the board to shape and make the holes for the push clips. Good thing is, trial and error ok for the holes for the clips as the board gets covered.
I bought a bench seat that has a back cover on it, thin type fiberboard,
It is just a cover though, it doesn't wrap around like Rich's picture.
Came out of a 77-78 reg cab as far as I know.
My 79 doesn't have anything currently on the back.
